To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE C. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in looks and more particularly to a door lock and my object is to provide a device for temporarily retaining the door in its open position when the same is so disposed.
A further object of the invention resides in providing means on the latch of an ordinary door adapted for engagement with an improved lock adapted to be carried on the wall against which the door is adapted to be opened.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device applied to use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the lock showing the lock on the door in effective locking position in engagement with the wall lock. Fig. 3 is a vertical section therethrough. Fig. it is a bottom plan view of the wall lock removed showing in dotted lines the position of the parts when operated by the actuating lever. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the spring members used for returning the parts to their initial positions in the wall look.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the wall of a structure having a doorway 2 formed therein which is adapted to be closed by the swinging door 3. Se-
cured to the inner and outer faces respectively of the door are the plates 4: and 5, the same being held to the door by means of the screws or bolts 6 and riveted to the plate t, and also held thereto by the same means which holds the plates 4 and 5 together, is an additional plate 7. This latter plate is provided with an offset portion 8 which forms a channel-way therein and slidably arranged in this oflset portion is a spring forced latch member 9, the free end of which projects beyond the free end of the door 3 to engage the usual keeper on the door frame.
The latch member 9 which is, in effect, a sliding spring forced bolt, has a thumb or finger piece 10 carried thereon which projects through a slot 11 in the offset portion 8, the contacting of the finger piece with the end walls of said slot limiting the movement of said latch member. The opposite or innor face of the latch member 9 is provided with a slot 12 which alines with an additional slot 13 in the plate 1, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly described. The plate 5 is also provided with an enlarged opening 14, and secured to said plate to project from the walls of said opening, is a channel-like plate 15 which projects through the door 2 and contacts with the inner face of the plate 4. Pivotally mounted on a vertical axis between the upper and lower walls of the channellike plate 15, is an additional latch member 16, the one end of which is reduced and disposed through the alining slots 12 and 13 respectively of the latch 9 and plate 4:. The opposite or outer end of the same is projected through the enlarged opening of the plate 5 and is provided with a head member 17. Then the latch member 9 is in its extended position, the latch 16 is disposed in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the plate 5 and the reduced end of this latch member 16 is so arranged, adjacent one end of the slot 12, that the latch member 16 may be swung on its pivot to retract the latch 9, although the retraction of the latch 9 will not necessarily affect the position of the latch 16.
My invention contemplates a means for retaining the door in its open position and to this end, I provide an additional locking means on the wall 1, some distance from the door-way 2 therein, this locking means being adapted to cooperate with the latch member 16 of the aforesaid lock. To this end, a casing 18 is provided, which is secured to the wall 1 in any desired manner, the one end of said casing being cut-away as shown at 19 and the front wall thereof being provided with an enlarged openin 20. Pivotally mounted on the inner face of the front wall of said casing is a pair of jaw members 21 which are angular in design and have portions thereof disposed across the opening 20 in the casing. The inner opposed edges of these angular jaws are spaced slightly from one another and the portions thereof within the outline of the opening 20 are bent as shown at 22 to provide a curved or conv-exed edge to readily receive therein the head of the latch 16. Secured to the upper and lower walls of this casing 18 are the leaf springs 23 which are bent intermediate of their ends to permit the free ends of the same to contact with portions of said jaws 21, thereby tending to force the same inwardly toward one another. Also secured to the upper and lower walls of this casing and at the rear thereof, is a vertical strip 2% which supports one end of a horizontal pintle 25, the opposite end of said pintle being mounted in the front wall of the casing. Pivotally mounted on this pintle between the inner opposed edges of the jaw members 21 and projecting through the cut-away portion 19 of the casing, is a lever 26. This lever being disposed between the inner opposed edges at the free ends of the jaw members retains the latter in spaced relation to one another, whereby only a portion of the enlarged opening 20 of the casing will be covered by these jaw members. By swinging the handle or projecting portion of this lever 26 upwardly or downwardly, it is obvious that the jaw members will be separated.
ln order to retain the lever 26 in a substantially horizontal position, whereby the space between the jaw members 21 will always remain the same, I have provided a spring member 27. This spring member consists of a continuous wire wrapped intermediate its ends about the pintle 25 and having portions thereof engaged with the vertical strip 2 f. Continuations of the wire are also bent to engage at their free ends the lever 26 which, from the disclosure made in the drawings, retains said lever in a horizontal position. Thus when the same is disposed upwardly or downwardly, to separate the jaw members 21, said lever will be returned to its initial position when released as will also said jaw members 21.
In practice, assuming that the door is in its closed position should. it be desired to open said door, the latch member 9 is retracted, by drawing inwardly upon the finpiece 16 which will release the engagement of said latch member with the keeper on the door-frame. The door is opened to its fullest extent toward the wall of the structure and the casing 18 is so positioned on said wall with respect to the latch member 16 that the head of said latter latch member is adapted to be received in the opening 20 of said casing, when the door is opened to the position above mentioned. As the head member 17 of the latch 16 enters the opening 20 of the casing 18, the same contacts with the bent or curved edges 22 of the jaws 21 and the force with which the door is opened, causes said jaws to be spread apart and as the jaws are returned to their initial positions, the same lock the head member of the latch therebetw'een. The door is thus retained and locked in its open position and it will be seen that in the contact of the latch member 16 with said jaws, said latch member may yield slightly in view of its engagement with the spring forced latch member 9, thus preventing undue strain from occurring. hen it is desired to release the engagement of the jaw members with the latch member 16, the handle or extended portion of the lever 26 is forced downwardly or upwardly to separate the jaw members, whereby the door may be moved toward its closed position and the latch member removed from the casing 18 without contact with any of the parts of the latter.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvi ous that various changes in form, aroportion. and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. A look of the class described consisting of a casing having an opening in the front wall thereof, a pair of pivoted jaw mem bers carried in said casing and projecting across the opening in the latter, spring means to normally force said jaw members toward one another, and means to retain said jaw members in spaced relation to one another, said latter means also forming a means for separating said aw members.
