JOHN D. SMITH, OF SCHUYLERVILLE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 90,317, dated Mag 18, 1869.
IIMPROVEIJIENT IN AXLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. SMITH, of Schuyler ville, in the county of Saratoga, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Axles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a metal cap,
or collar, clipped to the axle, and so made as to close up to the back, or inner end of the wagon-hub, inside of the outside main band that is always on the hub, to prevent it from splitting.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its' construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a hub and axle, with my improvement attached.
Figure 2 is a side view, and
Figure 3, an edge view of my invention.
A represent-s the axle, and
B, the hub.
(l is the metal band, placed around the back, or inner end of the hub, to prevent the hub from splitting.
This band I allow to extend beyond the edge of the hub a short distance.
On the axle A, and close to the inner, or back end inner, or back end of' the hub, thus preventing any mud or sand to pass in between the axle and the hub, and wearing the axle at the shoulder.
The plate D is in fact two plates, at and 1), both of which are clipped a sufficient distance, and the pieces 0 0 cut open are bent to the same side, so that when the two plates are put together, a square hole, d, is formed in the centre, of the same size as that part of the axle on which they are to be placed.
The outer edge of one of said plates is bent over the edge of the other, as shown in fig. 3, and the clips 0 c are placed, one above and the other below the axle, and secured in any suitable manner.
In the ordinary caps, which are placed outside the hub, more or less sand, 8250., will always work in and wear the axle, causing the wheel to run untrue, but with a flange, or plate, fitted inside of the back sand band of the hub, this is impossible.
Having thus fully described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the axle A, having a metal plate,
as shown and described, the plate D, formed of two pieces, having clips 0 c and a square opening, (I, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set rny hand and seal, this 18th day of May, 1868.
JOHN D. SMITH. [L. 5.] Witnesses:
