Letters Patent No. 101,370, dated March 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-AXLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LLOYD, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axles and Boxes for Vehicles, and I do hereby declare that the following is a' full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters marked thereon.
My invention relates to the combination and arrangement of a double box, nut, and washer with the axle, in such a manner as to secure an automatic supply of the lubricating substance employed to all the wearing surfaces for a greater length of time, without attention or renewal of the supply of said lubricating substance, than'has been hitherto possible in the use of similar devices, and also to attain a maximum of securityagainst the collection of grit or dust between the surface and the sticking fast of the boxes to the ax e.
The object of .my invention is to provide a combined box and axle for vehicles that can be run for a maximum of distance or length of time without attention, and with a minimum of wear and liability to derangement.
To enable others skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
In the drawings Figure 1, sheet 1, is an elevation representing the arrangement complete.
Figure 2, sheet 1, is a longitudinal section of the same.
Figure 3, sheet 1,'is an end view from the left of der a.
To obviate this difficulty the axle A is much enlarged at that part, and-the shoulder a is forged in one piece with the axle, and the whole finished or burned as shown in fig. 2, sheet 1.
Figure 4, sheet 1, is an end view from the right of The inner box B and outer box 0 are of such configuration as to correspond with and have a bearing upon the exterior surface of the enlarged part of the axle and upon the outer surface of the part forming the shoulder a, and upon each other, and when in position recesses or spaces are formed for collars or washers E, F, and G, and recesses 01'' spaces b b, for v retaining a supply of the lubricating substance. 7
The inner box B is provided with perthrations recesses, and longitudinal grooves, for the same purpose, but differs from all others in having the enlarged or expanded parts a 0, bearing upon and effectually lubricating the corresponding parts of the outer box 0 and the axle A.
The form of the outer box also admits of having feathers, d d, as shown, in such, position as to be more easily fitted to, and affording greater security against turning in the hub, than is usual in boxes of ordinary construction.
By this construction the recesses and grooves in box. B gather upand collect any dust or grit that may find its way to the bearing surface.
The washers E F G may be made of leather or some other suitable elastic substance, and serve the double purpose of preventing noise and also of preventing the entrance of grit or the escape of the lubricating substance to or from the wearing surfaces.
The nut D is firmly screwed against the shoulder e, and the washers E 1 G are made of just sufiicient thickness to be slightly compressed by the said nut, and said washers must.be occasionally renewed, as they become worn.
When in operation, the inner box B will usually revolve with the wheel or outer box 0; but if, from the entrance of grit or any other cause, undue or excessive friction should arise between the box B and the axle, the box B would adhere to the axle, and the wheel and box 0 would revolve around both, and the wearing be transferred to the outer surface of box B and inner surface of box 0..
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the outer box 0 and axle A, having an enlargement and shoulder a, the inner box B, having the enlarged or expanded parts 0 0', bearing upon and lubricating the outer box 0 and axle A, and forming recesses b b, substantially as described and specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
G. A. LLOYD. [1 s.]
