Description

COLEBURN S'TANARD.
Sand BandI No. 76,605. A PatentedApril 14', 1868,'
n @nit-eh tetes getest @High A. o. COLE-BURN AND n'. T; sTANAnD, 0F WAYNE, MICHIGAN.-
Letters Patent No. 76,605, dated April 14, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAND-GAP POR GARRIAGES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONGE'RN:
Be it known that we, A. 0. COLEBUnNand H. T. STANARD, of Wayne, inthe county of Wayne, andStete et' Michigan, have invented a new and useful Sand-Cap; and vwe do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference vbeing had to the annexed drawings, of whieh- I Figure 1 is a perspective `fiew'qf one style' of sand-cap, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view' of another style of the same invention. v
This invention consists of a.v cap or guard for' the purpose vof *pre 'enting sand, dust, &c'.',.i`rom getting between the journals of carriage-axles and the bearings of hubs, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed lto describe its eons'tr'netion and operation.
A represents acarrisge-axle, and b b represent the hubs o'f lwheels. c c represent elastic metallic bands encircling said axle near the inner ends of the hubs, said bands b'ng fastened tothe axle'by means of set-serew`s d d,
said screws pnssingthroiigh nuts e 'e placed between the vbands c and the-axle for the purpose of steaflying the screws. To the bands c. are attached annular flanges, L la', the former of which is-of greater radius(reekonng from the centre of the axle,) than the hub, while the latter is ofv less. To'the c'urvededges of said flanges 'It k nre secured rims z' z", the line of their width being at rightA angles with -the radius of the flanges The rim, t', extends over the outside of its hub-band, and tbe rim, 2", extends under lche inside fot' its hub-band. This isy not intended to be an arbitrary arrangement, Ibut merely to show that either style may be adopted. By this device, the'sand, dirt, Sie., thrown up by the wheel are prevented from getting between the axle and heb, to the` detriment of both, andthe increase of friction. As the dirt thrown up by the wheel 'falls on the axle from above, it is only necessary to place the guards'on the upper part of theaxle. The band c being elastic, it may be adjusted to axles of different sizes. I
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, The adjustable sand-caps c t applied in eonnectin,\vitl1"an axle andhub, as and for the purpose described.
