Be it known that I, ANTHONY Konn'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain and Shade Holders, of which the following is a specifica tion.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for hanging curtains and shades and commonly known as curtain and shade holders; it comprehends that type of said holders which is made adjustable to accommodate curtain poles and shade rollers of different lengths.

My invention has for its object the provision of a simple and effective bracket fashioned with integral arms having bearings for the curtain pole and ends or pintles of the shade roller, together with a notched bar adapted to be secured to the window frame or like part, said bracket having a slot to enable it to receive said bar endwise, the end wall of the slot being designed to engage and interlock with any one of the notches in the bar, and said bracket having a spring actuated latch to engage and interlock with another notched part of the bar, whereby the bracket is firmly and detachably secured in any position to which it is moved along the bar.

IVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists of the parts and the constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts which I will hereinafter describe and claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification and in which similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the brackets and companion notched bar.

In carrying out my invention, I secure upon opposite sides of the window frame, or like part, the bars, A, to each of which a bracket, B, is detachably and adjustably fitted.

Each of the brackets, though not necessarily, piece of metal fashioned design having a cut-out or which forms an upwardly-presented, openbearing or seat for the curtain pole, said bracket having also a forwardly extending B, is by preference, made of a single in some attractive curved portion a 1 arm 1), with a bearing for the journal end of the ordinary shade roller, not shown. It will be understood that one of the brackets will be disposed near or just beyond each end of the shade, and that the bearing b of one bracket will be adapted to receive the usual round journal-end of the roller and that the other or opposite bracket will have its usual bearing, 1), open to receive the flattened journabend commonly provided on shade rollers.

Each of the aforsaid brackets, B, is provided with a slot, 0, which is adapted to receive one of the notched bars, A, before mentioned, the slot being sufficiently longer than the width of the bar, to allow the bracket to be readily moved from one point to another along said bar.

The bars, B, have notches, d, (1, formed in their opposite edges, and the ends of the bars may be flanged or bent inwardly as shown at e, which will the better insure the retention of the brackets on the bars and lessen the liability of the parts becoming separated and misplaced or lost when the bracket and bar are detached from the window frame or casing; and also dispense with washers behind the bars to space the latter from the window frame.

In assembling the parts and attaching them in operative position, the bracket and bar are turned into such relative position that the end of the bar may freely enter the slot in the bracket, after which the bracket is turned to stand outwardly at right angles to the bar, and moved along said bar to the desired osition. When the latter has been attaineo, the bracket is moved cross-wise of the bar and until the end wall of the slot, 0, in the bracket enters a notch in the adjacent edge of the bar and interlocks therewith.

Suitable screws, f, are passed through the end portions of the bars and into the window frame or casing, or other support in rear of the bars, which screws when tightened down draw the inwardly-bent ends of the bars tightly and securely against the window frame or casing, or rear support, thereby securing the bar firmly in position with its rear surface appropriately spaced from the window casing or frame, the bent ends of the bars taking the place of separate spacing washers for this purpose.

In order that all danger of the bracket becoming displaced or moving longitudinally of the bar may be provided for, I rivet or otherwise rigidly attach to the side of the bracket one end of a spring detent, or latch, g, which is herein shown as consisting of a piece of spring-metal which curves downwardly from its point of attachment and thence curves upwardly and has its lower or free end bent to stand cross-wise under the lower edge of the notched bar, said bent end, or pawl, 9', being adapted to spring into locking engagement with any of the notches in the bar when alined therewith. This action of the spring-latch also insures the locking engagement of the end wall of the slot in the notches formed in the other edge of the bar. Thus the notches in one edge of the bar are adapted and designed to be engaged by the bracket itself, and the notches in the other edge of the bar are adapted and designed to be engaged by the spring-pressed latch carried by the bracket, the result being that the bracket is clamped to both edges of the bar so securely that it cannot accidentally work loose and shift its position on the bar.

It will be understood that each bracket and bar is constructed and arranged as before described and that the bars and brackets will be so positioned on the frame or casing as to support the opposite ends of the curtain pole and shade roller in the desired manner.

The bars and brackets are quickly and in a simple manner and without the exercise of skilled labor, applied to any window or like frame, and when so applied, the brackets may be adjusted or moved relative to the fixed bars to accommodate the width of the shade or length of the shade roller.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a curtain and shade holder, the combination of a bar having notches in one edge, a bracket mounted on and having a slot to receive said bar, the end wall of the slot adapted to engage and interlock with said l notches, and a detent carried by the bracket and adapted to engage and interlock with the other and opposite part of the bar.

2. In a curtain'and shade holder, the combination of a bar having notches in its opposite edges, a bracket having means for supporting one end of a curtain pole and shaderoller, said bracket having a slot to receive said bar, and to engage with the notches in one edge thereof, and a latch carried by the bracket and adapted to engage with the notches in the other edge o1 the bar.

3. In a curtain and shade holder, the com bination of a bar having notches in its opposite edges, a bracket having a slot to receive said bar endwise and to enable the bracket to be moved longitudinally of the bar, the end wall of said slot adapted to enter the notches in one edge of the bar and lock therewith, and a spring-actuated latch on the bracket and having its free end to enter and engage the notches in the other edge of the bar.

4. In a curtain and shade holder, the combination of a bar having its ends bent substantially at right-angles to the length thereof, said bar having notches formed in its opposite side edges, a bracket having a slot to receive the bar and to enable the bracket to be adjusted to different points in the length of the bar, the end wall of the slot adapted to enter and interlock with the notches in one edge of the bar, and a latch fixed to the bracket and having its free end bent to stand cross-wise of the other notched edge of the bracket and adapted to be moved into looking engagement with the notches thereof.
