SUSPENSORY DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30, 1901.

SUSPENSORY DEVICE Specification of Letters l atent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed January 30, 1907. Serial No. 354,937.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspensory Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in suspensory devices and has particularly in view the production of a device of this character more especially adapted for the suspension of picture frames, bird cages, flower pots and the like small articles.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a casing for devices of the character specified above in which means can be mounted to adjust the height at which the device is to be suspended.
Another object is to )rovide a device of this character which will be simple in construction and safe and eflicient in operation.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts, I have embodied my invention in what I consider the preferred form.
Referring to said drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line AA, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a view of the interior looking from the front. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the casing. Fig. 5 is a detail of shaft that is used in connection with the cas ing.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the casing,
designated in its entirety by the reference character (L, comprises a substantially rectangular, integral frame, the upper portions 11 of which are rounded and. taper toward the center and terminate in an upstanding circular portion 2, through which a longitudinal opening 6 is formed, said 0 )ening b providing a guideway for the cable or cord c- The bottom portions of each side are similarly rounded, and taper towards the center and terminate in vertical depending walls l, which are connected by means of a horizontal fiat portion 5, through which an opening at is formed to which a suspending hook e is attached, Each of the sides f, g, are provided with a centrally located opening in which is mounted a shaft 7i.
Referring more articularly to Fig. 5 of the drawings it will be seen that the shaft h l is provided with a turning head i at one of its ends, and adjacent to the other end it is provided with a transverse slot j, which serves as a means for the attaching of the cord or cable 0. The turning head i is provided with a hub 6 which is of a larger diameter than the shaft, and said hub terminates in the beveled portion 7. Longitudinal slots at are formed on opposite sides of said hub, said slots running from the beveled portion to a point just beyond the center of said hub. The opposite end of the shaft terminates in the beveled shoulder 8. A
mounted on said hub, the lugs n being placed within the slots m.
A pawl g has a pivotal connection 7, with one of the sides (g) of the casing. 11 designates the toe, or engaging member of the pawl, and s designates a lifting lug therefor.
The various parts of the invention are assembled in the following manner :The shaft h is passed through the toothed wheel a until the slots m receive then passed through the openings in the side of the casing until the shoulder 8 is in alinement with the opening in the side. A screw is then passed. through said opening and into the opening in the end the shaft is held in position. With this done, the toothed wheel a on the hub-portion of the shaft 7t rests outside of the casing and adjacent to the outer face of the side 9 thereof. The pawl q is pivoted to the outer face of said side 9 above the toothed. wheel 77/ in such manner that when it is desired to lock the shaft h against movement, the toe p of said pawl q will become engaged. with the teeth of said toothed wheel. the suspension hook is then passed through the lower longitudinal opening d, and a head 9 is placed upon the end of the shank to hold it within the said opening. The cable or cord 0 is then passed down through the upper longitudinal guideway, to and through the transverse hole in the shaft and then a few turns are wound on the shaft.
From the foregoing it is thought the opparent. It will be noted that a rotation of said shaft in one direction will raise the device, and that a reverse of said shaft will lower the device. And it will also be noted that by means of the upper longitudinal guide, the cord or cable is accurately guided to or from the shaft. And it will be further toothed wheel a, provided with lugs n, is I:
the lugs 01, and is of the shaft, whereby The shank of eration of the invention will be readily aping means.
noted that the rotation of the shaft in either direction can be readily checked by means of the pawl q, being thrown into engagement with the toothed wheel n. And it will be still further noted that by means of the lug and slot connection of the toothed wheel and shaft, said toothed wheel will at all times be in a position to rotate with the shaft, and yet be capable of being longitudinally adjusted thereon.
In the practical application of the invention the bird cage or the like is attached to the suspension hook and thecable or cord is connected with the ceiling, or other support- To vary the height of the suspended article, the shaft is rotated which takes up the cord to increase the height, or let off the cord to decrease its height. The suspension hook at the bottom of the casing is freely rotatable to afford means for turn ing the article held in suspension.
the shaft at a point between the finger-piece and said side bar, and a gravitating pawl pivoted to said side bar in position to engage the toothed wheel and having a lifting lug in close proximity to the said fin 'er-piece.
