UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS STULZ AND CHARLES T. NVILSON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SUSPENSION DEVICE FOR HAMMOCKS.
SPBCIPICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 364,190, dated May 31, 1887.
Application filed July 20, 1886. Serial No. -2(l8,5l3. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, LOUIs STULZ and CHARLES T. \VILSON, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county 5 of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Suspension Devices for Hammocks,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in IO which- Figure 1 represents a perspective rear view of a hammock rope-lock embodying ourinvention. Fig. Z-represents a perspective front view of the lock and attached rope as secured 15 to a post or support. 7 Fig. 3 represents the opposite side of the look from that shown in Fig. 1, the rope being'coiled around the arm in a different manner.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists of a lock for the rope of a hammock so constructed that the rope is tightly held and the lock prevented from slipping.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the lock, which is formed of a plate, A, with two openings, B, therein, an arm, 0, extending laterally from the plate, a hook, D, at the end of the arm, and a spur, E,which projects from what may be termed the back of the plate.
The operation is as follows: The rope is passed through one of the openings B and its end knotted, so as not to slip through the same. The rope is then looped around a post, 5 tree, &c., from which the hammock is to be suspended, and passed through the other opening of the plate; but where the rope may be applied over the top of the post the loop may be primarily formed and then thrown over the said post. The rope is next drawn up, whereby it tightens around the post, and the plate is forced against the latter, so that the spur O enters the same. The rope is now wound around the arm C, so as to be knotted or snubbed, as it were, thereon,whereby it is prevented from playing out, it being seen the holder remains engaged with the same. and the portion of the rope around the arm 0 is prevented from slipping therefrom, owing to the hook D at the end of the same acting as a guard. \Vhen the rope is loosened on the arm it may play out, so as to relieve the loop around the post and disengage the spur therefrom,whereby the lock or hammock may be raised or lowered or the holder entirely removed from the post, as desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A look fora hammock-rope, consisting of the plate A, formed of a single piece of metal having openings therein and provided with a lateral projecting arm, 0, having a hook, D, and a spur, E, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
