AI GEORGE WIGAND AND FRANK J. SGHROEDER, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FAN.
Application filed June 25,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnome VVIGAND and FRANK J. SoHnonDnn, citizens of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have in-A vented a new and useful Fan, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to fans particularly designed for use as any advertising novelty.
The object of the invention is to provide a fan designed to be folded so as to represent some object such for example' as a baseball bat.
A further object is to provide a fan the blades of which are designed to contain photographs or other illustrations, it being particularly intended to group the pictures upon the fan so that they will. for example, show 'the members of a club or organization.
A still further object is to provide simple and eli'icient means for locking the fan either folded.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
VIn the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred forni of the invention.
ln said drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the fan partly folded. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the fan entirely folded, portions of the fan being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through some of the. blades of the fan and showing` the tlexible connection therebetween. Fig. 4t is an enlarged section through one of the sides and the adjoining blades of the fan and showing the connecting strips engaging the same.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a handle preferably of wood and shaped in the present instance to simulate the handle portion of a base ball bat. A passage 2 extends longitudinally through the center portion of this handle and projecting from the large end of said handle are parallel ears 3 provided with longitudinal slots 4. These ears are spaced apart a distance equal to the diameter of passage 2 and the slots therein register with longitudinal grooves 5 disposed longitudinally within the wall of passage 2 at diametrically opposite points.
Extending through the slots l is a pivot pin G on which is pivotally mounted a pair Specification of Letters latent.

of strips 7 designed, when in alinement with the handle portion 1, to form continuations of the corresponding or adjoining surfaces of the handle portion. The pivot ends of these strips are squared so as to lit firmly against the large end of the handle portion 1 either when the strips are in alinement with the handle portion or when they are swung laterally in position at substantially right angles thereto. The inner or adjoining faces of the two strips 7 are preferably dat and disposed in parallel planes.
A yoke 8 is slidably mounted within grooves 5 and has its ends fastened to pin 6. The middle portion of this yoke a spring 9 fastened to it, said spring eX- tending into the passage 2 and being` attached to a holding pin 10 arranged transversely within the handle portion. Any suitable sounding device such as a whistle 11 may be arranged within the passage 2.
Mounted upon the pin t3 and between the ears 3 is a series of blades 12 each of which is of the same contour as the strips 7. Said blades, however, have both faces flat and may be formed of cardboard, Celluloid, or other like material whereas the strips 7 are preferably formed of wood. Each blade 12 has parallel longitudinal slits l?) therein adjacent the longitudinal elges thereof and a ribbon 1st or other flexible device is looped through the slitted portion of each blade as shown in Fig. 3. t-he end blades 12 being glued or otherwise fastened to. the strips 7 with the terminals of the ribbon t disposed therebetween. A photograph or other illustration can be placed upon cach of the blades so that when the fan is opened all of the photographs will be exposed to view.
To fold the fan strips 7 are swung toward each other upon the pivot pin 6 until they are brought into alinemen't with the handle porton 1, this swinging action causing the corners of the pivot ends of the strips 7 to push against the handle portion and extend the spring 9 until said strips assume positions in alinement with the handle portion whereupon the spring contracts and draws the ends of the strips rmly against the handle portion. In the form of device shown in the drawings the parts when moved into this position correctly simulate a base ball l bat. To open the fan the foregoing operation is reversed and the spring obviously acts to bind the sides of the strips 7 onto the end of handle portion 1. When the fan is the the has thus extended all of the illustrations upon l tion having outstanding slotted guides therethe blades Will be exposed to view. l on, a yoke slidably mounted.
