HARRY R, MCFARLAND, OF NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA.
HAND CANCELING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 27, 190s.
Application filed March 17, 1908. Serial No. 421,608.
To dll whom it may concern.;
Be it known that I, HARRY R. MGFARLAND, a citizen vof the United States, residing at Newport News, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand Canceling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to hand canceling devices, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character with a fiexible handle whereby the die will be firmly impressed regardless of the angle at which the handle'is held.
A further'o'bject of the invention is to provide a device of this character with means whereby the flexibility of the handle may be readily regulated.
To these ends the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their ar-i rangement in operative combination, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
' in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central transverse sectional view of a hand canceling device constructed in accord-y ance with my invention, the handle being illustrated in elevation. Fig. 2 is a h0rizoutalv sectional view upon the line 22 of Fig.
tion AI, having a hemispherical opening adapted :tor the reception of a ball 5, provided upon a threaded rod or member 6. The ball A is retained in position within the opening of the projection a by a suitable plate 7, having its center provided with a rounded opening alining with the opening of the portion 4 and having the outer-walls of the opening beveled or cone-shaped to allow for the free swinging of the member 6 and the ball 5 within the openings. The plate'? is retained upon the portion t bythe screws 8,
or in any other 'desired or preferred manner. The member 6 is adapted for engagement with a cup-shaped element 9 and an interiorly threaded handle 10. The member 9 is provided with dependinglanges, an'd interposed betwen the inner face of the member 9 and theupper face of the die receiving member is a helical spring 10, adapted to surround the projection 4 and to normally retain the handle l0 in vertical alinement with the diereceiving member.
From the above description it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and edective handle for hand cancel ing devices, or the like, one which normally retains the handle in vertical position but which will effectively cause a perfect impression by the die 1 should the handle be held at any angle.
The tension of the helical spring, and the consequent resiliency of the handle 10 may be readily regulated by revolving the interiorly threaded `handle upon the threaded member 6 and then revolving the cup member 9 to contact with a lower portion of the handle, thus causing the spring to expand. and allow more elasticity to the handle.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the character described, a die receiving member and a die therefor, a projection upon the die receiving member having a semi-circular opening,-a threaded member having a. ball engaging the semicircular opening of the member, a retaining plate having a semicircular opening upon its inner .tace and a concaved opening. commuj nicating with the semi-circular opening/ upon the projection, an inverted cup having a centrally threaded aperture engaging the threaded member,l a helical spring within the cup and engaging the die receiving member, and an interiorly threaded. handle engaging the projecting portion of lthe threaded member.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY R. MCFARLAND.
