' Application filed January 3o, 190s. serial No; 413,470.
To all whom 'it may concern: Y
Be it known that I, HUBERT M. GREIsT, `a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinvented or discovered certain new and useful Improvel ments in Sewing-Machine-Attachment Holders, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being hadtherein totheaccompanying drawings.
This invention has for'fits 'object to pro-l vide a sewing machine attachment holder of simple construction, and inexpensive to make, whereby various attachments, such as binders, hemmers, quilters, and the like, may be readily secured in workingposition on the presser-foot of a sewing machine, and readily detached therefrom when desired. g' I To this end the improved attachment holder comprises a clamping headmounted on the shank of a presser foot andbetween which and the front'wallof said shank `an attachment may be clamped. Said clamping head isprovided with a shank oneiportion of which is polygonal or rectangular, .so as to enter a corresponding aperture inthe part on whichl it is mounted, and another portion of which shankisscrew-threadedso as to be engaged by aset-nut,the parts being so constructed as to preventvthem from becoming detached Vfrom the shank of the presser-foot, aswill hereinafter appear. l
vIn the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view!oftheimproved-at tachment holder, and Fig. I2`is a perspective view of a hemmer 4adapted to be v heldinl working position said holder.` Figsi and 4 are plan andjsideviews showinga hemmer secured in working position-'relative to the presser-foot which forms the attachment holder. Fig.v 5 is a front view of l thepresser foot with 'the shank of the clamp.-
ing headin vertical section, and Fig. 6 is jan enlarged section through `the clampinghead and its nut, on line 6-6, Fig. 4. Figa 7 is a perspective view showing a` quilter mounted in the attachment holder. s
Referring to the drawings, `12`denotes a presser-footadapted for attachmentk to the presser-bar of a sewing machine, and preferably stamped `from sheet metal, said `presserfoot being provided with a lug 13 having a` polygonal aperture 14, which apertureV is adapted to` receive the polygonalportion 15 of the shank of a clampinghead16,to pre- H vent said head from turning, said shank having also a threaded extension 17 adapted to be engaged by the threaded portion of a nut 18. The` said nut 18 is provided at its outer end with a milled head 19 and at its inner end Vwith a peripheral flange 20 which eX- tends beneath the head ofa iXed pin 21 so kthat when the said nut is turned, to loosen or tighten the clamping head, its inner end will be held closely adjacent to or in contact with the back wall of theA lug 13 by the said flange and the overlapping head of said pin.
`To prevent the clampinghead from being :detached from the nut when the latter is turned the said nut is preferably counterbored so that the .eXtreme inner end of the shank extending into the counterbored portionof the nut'may be slightly upset to form a small head or enlarged portion loosely fitting the recess afforded by said counterbored portion, `and which enlarged portion is adapted to engage the shoulder at the inner end `of said counterbored portion, and
*thus prevent the nut from becoming detached from the clamping head; and thisconstruction will also serve to limit the turning movement of the nut in loosening the clamping head.
An attachment, as hemmer 22, which is to be secured in place on the presser-foot, is provided with a shank 23 preferably having an open horizontal slot 24 which will permitthesaid shank to be slipped beneath or behind the clamping head'16 and receive the polygonal 4portion 15v of the shank of the clamping head; said shank fitting between said clamping head and the front wall of the verticaly shank of the presser-foot so that when the said head is tightened by screwing up the clamping nut18 the attachment will be securely held in place, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; As the polygonal portion 15 of the shank of the clamping head is closely embraced by the horizontal walls of the slot 24 it is obvious that this construction will permit a hemmer or other attachment to be adjusted laterally and to be secured in differentlateral positions, to provide for stitching at different distances from the edge of the Work ,this construction providing a positive bearing for side adjustment as will be understood, so that the attachment will be held steadily at all times.
s The clamping head is preferably provided o n its inner face with a horizontal concave 7; and thus it will be understood that the said clamping head is adapted to hold attachments having either' round, half-round or lat shanks.
l/Vhen it is desired to insert an attachment in working position the clamping head will be tightened against the shank of the attachment by screwing up the nut 1S and when it is desired to remove the attachment from working position said nut will be loosened to release the attachment, as will be understood.
Having thus described my invention l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A sewing machine attachment holder consisting of the combination with a presserfoot having a vertical shank, of a clamping head having' a shank extending horizontally through a portion oi" said presser-'foot shank and so mounted therein as to be prevented from turning, and between which clamping head and the front wall of said presser-foot shank a portion of a sewing machine attachment may be clamped, the said shank of said clamping head having a threaded portion, and a nut engaging said threaded portion, said clamping head and nut being so connected together as to prevent their separation.
2. A sewing machine attachment holder consisting' of the combination with a presserfoot having a vertical shank provided with a polygonal opening, of a clamping head arranged at the front of said presser-foot shank and provided with a shank having a polygonal portion, fitting said opening, and having also a threaded portion, so that a portion of a sewing machine attachment may be clamped between the said clamping head and the front wall of said presser-foot shank, and a nut engaging said threaded portion, said clamping head and nut being so connected together as to prevent their separation.
3. A sewing machine attachment holder consisting of the combination with a presserioot the shank portion of which is provided with a polygonal aperture, of a clamping head having a polygonal shank one portion of which is adapted to be received by said polygonal aperture, and another portion of which is screw-threaded, a nut engaging the screw-threaded portion of said shank, and means for preventing said nut from becoming detached from said shank when it is turned, said clamping head having a horizontal concave recess on its inner face.
4l. A sewing` machine attachment holder consisting of the combination with a presser'- :toot the vertical shank portion of which is provided with a polygonal aperture, of a clamping head having a horizontally disposed shank one portion ot which is polygonal so as to iit said polygonal aperture, and another portion of which is ,sci'ew-threaded, a. nut engaging the serew-tlneaded portion of said shank, means for preventing said nut from becoming detached trom said shank when it is turned, and a sewing machine attachment having a shank litting between the said clamping head and thev front wall of said. presser-foot shank and provided with a horizontal slot or opening to permit of horizontal adjustment ot the attachment.
5. A sewingmachine attachment holder consisting of the combination with a presseri'oot having` a vertical shank, oit a clamping head havingV a shank extending horizontally through a portion of said presser-hiet shank and so mounted therein to be prevented from turning, and between which clamping head and the front wall ol said presser-foot shank a portion of a sewing machine attachment may be clamped, the said shank ot said clamping head having a. threaded portion and an enlarged end, and a nut engaging said threaded portion and having a counterbored portion t'orming` a recess in which said enlarged end of said clamping-howl shank loosely lits.
t5. i sewing machine attaclnncnt holder consisting of the combination with a presserfoot having a vertical shank provided with a polygonal opening` et a clamping head arranged at the front ot said presser-foot shank and provided with a shank having a polygonal portion, fitting said opening, and having also a threaded portion, so that a portion of a sewing machine attachn'lent may be clamped between the said clamping head and the front wall of said ln'esscr-toot shank, a nut engaging said threaded portion and having a peripheral tlange at its inner end, and a pin lixed to said presser-:toot shank and having a head overlapping said. liange.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
