SEWING-MACHINE EMBROIDERING OR DARNING FOOT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Application filed July 3, 1909. Serial No. 505,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM C. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Embroidering or Darning Feet, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the use of a family sewing machine for embroidering or darning the ordinary presser foot is usually removed and the work is shifted beneath the needle by the attendant for the embroidering or darning operations, the feed of the machine working idly. In thus shifting the work manually needles are frequently broken by being slightly sprung out of place by the pull on the thread, so that a needle in its descent strikes the throat-plate, instead of passing through the needle throat or hole.
The present invention has for its object to avoid this difiiculty by providing a foot preferably comprising a ring which is adjustably attached to a shank adapted to be secured to the presser-bar, so that when the presser-bar is dropped to its lowest point the foot may be so adjusted as to be closely adjacent to the work, but not so as to press thereon in such a manner as to interfere with the free shifting of the work by the attendant, the ring taking the strain on the thread so as to relieve the needle'from such strain, thereby avoiding such springing of the needle as might be likely to cause it to be broken.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved embroidering or darning foot, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes a shank having a horizontal portion provided with a slot 13 adapted to engage a suitable flattened portion or tenon on the presser bar, for attachment thereto, the said shank being provided with a depending lug or portion 1 1 threaded for the engagement of a set screw 15. The foot portion of the attachment is preferably made in the form of a horizontally disposed ring 16 connected with a vertical shank 17 having a vertical slot 18 for the reception of the set screw 15.
The shank and foot members of the device each consist of a piece of sheet metal bent to a right-angular shape, and the whole device is thus adapted to be made at very little expense.
lVith the parts thus constructed it will be understood that when the presser bar has been dropped to its lowest position and the shank 12 is secured to said presser-bar the ring foot 16 may be so adjusted vertically that it will be closely adjacent to the throat plate, but will not press the goods against the feed, leaving the work free to be shifted by the attendant.
The adjustability of the foot adapts the attachment for sewing machines of different kinds in which the positions of the presserbars, when dropped to their lower points, vary. This adjustment may be effected simply by loosening the screw 15 and then adjusting the foot to the desired position, after which the screw will be tightened to secure the said footin place.
In the use of the invention, as the attendant shifts the work beneath the ring foot the inside wall of the opening in the ring foot will receive the strain on the needle thread and thus relieve the needle of such strain as would otherwise be likely to spring it out of position and endanger breakage thereof.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut:
1. An embroidering or darning sewing machine foot consisting of right angular shank and foot sheet metal members at tached together and each having a horizontal and a vertical portion, combined with means for securing said members together, the foot member comprising a horizontally disposed ring having a complete circular wall surrounding a central opening therein.
2. An embroidering or darning sewing machine foot comprising a right-angular sheet metal shank member and a right-angular sheet metal foot member, the latter having a horizontally disposed ring foot, combined with means for adjustably securing the vertical portions of said members together so as to permit of vertical adjustment of said ring foot.
3. An embroidering or darning sewing machine foot comprising an attaching shank having a slotted horizontal portion and a depending portion having a threaded hole, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, iombined with a horizontall i dlisposled1 rinlg in presence of two Witnesses. oot portion iaving a vertica s ottec s um i, and a set screw by Which the said ring foot WILLIAM ELLIS 5 portion and its shank may be secured to Witnesses:
