Laim Patent No. 90,004, dated' M11/y 11, 1869.

GRAININGAPPARATUS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and mang part of the same.

Be it known that'I, WILLIAM H. KAY, of Lemont, in Cook county, inthe State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for-Grainiug Paint in Imitation of the Grain of Wood; and I do hereby 4declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,- re'erence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the machine;

Figure 4, a perspective View of a strip of oil-cloth, with apertures cutv in,'for the purpose hereinafter described.

' The object of my invention consists in causing paint to resemble the grain of wood by a series of manipulations, as follows:

I first paint the object to be grained with a brush, as in the ordinary way. I then cover the same with the oil-cloth, g. 4, having apertures cut in, as shown; after which I rub over the oil-cloth with a piece of cloth, or brush, which takes the paint ofi' the wood through every aperture; which, having been accomplished, I take the oil-cloth off, the larger lights having'heen made in the paint.

Then, in order to make the lines showing .the grain or growth of the wood, I use the machine shown in fig. 1, which is constructed and operated as follows:

Between each disk is placed a ring, e, also shown in g..3. These rings are used for the purpose of keeping the disks a certain distance apart.

The disks and rings all revolve loosely on the roller a, as is shown more particularly in g. 2, each one relvolving independently of the other.

The disks have notches cutin their periphery, at unequal distances from each other, so that as compared with each other, they alternate, this being necessary to make a good imitation on. the paint.

The disks and rings areall held in placeon the roller a by means of washers d ll on either end of the roller, held in place by the pinsi i passing through.

This device is used to roll over the paint, back and forth by hand, after the lights have been made, as described, which causes the paint to resemble'the grain of oak or any` other kinds of' wood desired.

What I claim as new, and desire to securel by Let ters Patent, is

1. The devices shown in fig. 1, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The use of oil-cloth having apertures, as set forth,v in'combination with the device shown in iig. 1, for the purpose described.
