Description

nit/eil mmaptant @anni Lette/rs Patent No. 88,267, dated March 30, 1869.
MACHINE FOR FITTING EELLOES TO WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the Bama.
A Mw*- To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, FREDERICK H. BaiNKKoiTnn, of Callahans Ranch, county of Siskiyou, State of Galifornia, have invented an Improved Device for Fitting Felloes to VVagon-Wheels; and I do hereby declare the followi'iig description and accompanying drawings are suicient to enable any person skilled in the art or -scieiice to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device for fitting felloes to the spokes of wheels; and
It consists in securing to the huh of the wheel, on eachsidc of the spokes, a circular band or ring, to which the mechanism for iittiug the felloes may be attached; and, in an apparatus for forcing -the felloes to the proper position, and retaining the spokes where d esired, so tha't the -fellore can bc marked previous to hai-'in g the mortise bored, andalsoto correct any irregularity in the felloe, afterit vhas been inortised and 4fitted to the spokes. This apparatus may be placed opposite to any spoke in thewheel, b y merely changing its position in the rings or bands around the hub, so that the felloe may be operated upon at any point necessary on its circumference, or rim.
To more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, form ing a part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the wheel having my invention attached.
Figure 2 is a front view.
Figure 3 is a back vicw.
Similar letters of reference in each of the iigures indicate like parts.
A is the hub of a wagon-wheel, having the spokes a a.
Aroiuideacli end of this huh, and on each side of the spokes, I place the rings or bands B B, and secure them together by means of bolts, b b, or other known device, which pass between the spokes.
The bands B are provided with holes, e e e, in their face, opposite each spoke, into which the apparatus for drawing the felloes down against the shoulder of the spokes is .secured by means of a hook.
The clamping-frame is composed of a block, C, having three longitudinal slots, d Z d, passing through it.
The top of the frame C is bent at right angles, so as to form a projecting cap, D, through which a screw, E, passes.
The screw E, after passing through the cap, is screwed down through a hole in the circular yoke F, and presses against the block G, the ends ofthe yoke passing through holes in the ends -of the block, where it is confined by nuts.
This entire frame is secured to the bands B B by means ofthe hook g, which is placed in the holes e e e opposite any spoke to which it is desired to fit the felloe.
' The operation ofthe device is as follows, taking, for instance, asixteen (16) spoke wheel:
After the tenons are all bored on the ends of the spokes, I lay on one of the bended felloes. If the telloe is out oi' circle at the point'of any spoke, I attach the clamping-frame opposite the spoke, and draw the felloe down to place against the shoulder on the spoke, by turning down the screw E. If the felloe will not stay to its place on the tenons, I use a clamp, K, which clasps the spokes, and which has theV arms ff passing through the openings (l d to the opposite side ot the clamping-frame, where they are secured and tightened by means of the spring h, which is attached to one of' the arms, and spring into a rack, t, formed on the end of the other arm. I then niark the telloe at thc point opposite the centi'e of each spoke, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and bore at the mark opposite 2, 2 3, 4, 5, (i, 7 8'; No. 1, I boie one twenty-fourth of an inch toward No. 2, and N o. 9, one twenty-fourth of an inch toward N o. S. I then take the other half of the bended felloe, and lay it on and clamp i-t down, as above de Yscribed, and niark it in the same manuel', taking care to bore the first and last holes one twenty-burth of an inch toward the centre of the felloe. Aspace of one twenty-fourth of aii inch must be left at each Joint of the felloe, so that the wheelwill not be felloe-bound when the tie is put on.
With this device, I ain enabled to fit felloes with great ease and celerity, and so completely bindingthe paits together that the wheel will be much more lserviceable than when made in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described my invention,
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1,. The bands B B; secured together on cach end of the hub A, for retaining the clamping-frame, substantially as and for the purpose described,
2. The clamping-frame, consisting of the block C, having the loi'igitudinal openings d d dand cap D, together with the block G, yoke F, and screw E, the whole arranged substantially as above described.
3. The clamp K, with its arms fj, spring li, and rack t, for securing the spokes, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
