Description
`waited wtw @MRM d. BISHOP, OF HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
' l 'Laws Piumino. 89,970, zaad Ma@ 11,1869.4r
` IMPRovED Herman-NAIL.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the came Toall whcmdt'rncy concern: l
B e itknown that I, J. W. BISHOP, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement, in Picture- Nails; and 'I do hereby declare `the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to bea full, clear', and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, inv V l v Figure l, `a view of the `nail complete, and in* Figure 2, a central section enlarged.- v This invention relates to an improvement in the article of manufacture commonly known as picture nails, which are used for various purposes, the object being to cap a common cutnail so as to ornament the head, and give to it1a iinished appearance. To this end i The invention consists in placing a disk of sheetmetal overthe head of Aa common cut-nail, and in a die prepared for the purpose, close the disk over so as to cover the head, and, at thesame time, to swage the head into proper forum.V
`In order tothe clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. i i u A isa common cut-nail, .its head, as usual, nearly square, but of no regular or de ned shape,
Over'such a head Iplace a disk`,B, of sheet-metal, and then, in dies prepared for the purpose, strike the cap and head into shape, as seen in iig. 1 and in iig. 2, enlarged, where the original nail is shown in neutral tint, and its form, after the process of capping, denoted in red. This caps the nail, so that it may be driven in the usual manner lof' driving such nails, the head having an oval plated appearance, land this with very slight addition to the cost of the nail, much less than what is known as the French nail, the `nail which iscommonly capped. n i
I-do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming capping the heads of nails, as such, I am aware, is not new, the process oi' capping herein described fully illustrating the' dierencebetween the common process of capping and my own.'
Having fully described my invention, 1
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
AA cut-nail, the head of which, without previous preparation, or change of form, is covered with a cap of metal, inv the manner described and set forth, as an article of manufacture. t
