UNITED STATES PATENT oFFioEQi HARRY W. ALLISON, OF EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO, ASSIG.\'OR TO W. T. ROBERTS, OF EAST i LIVERPOOL, OHIO. a i
No. 899,197. r i I I Application filed December To all'whoin it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W.
. siding at East Liverpool, in' the county of Columbiana and State of'Ohio, have invent- 3 in.
ed certain new and useful Improvements \Yrenches. of which the following is a spccifii cut away,
cation, reference being had therein to t 1e accompanying drawing-.-
T tis'invention relates to wrenches. and the invention has for its object to provide a wrench of simple and durable construction that'can be easily and quickly manipulated to grip a pipe, mit or similar article.
Another object of this invention is tUlllS-e .pensewith the use of screw threads. springs" and other delicate mechanism used in connectionwith wrenches.
;To this end, I have devised a wrench consisting of practicallv three parts, two pivotally connected jaws and a handle or lever having a segmental slot extending at an angle to the longitudinal plane of the handle, one of the jaws being pivoted to the handle or lever while'thc" other of said jaws is movably connected at one end to the handle or I lever. The jaws are opened and closed by placing one of said jaws in engagement with an object and then manipulating the handle or lever, the distance between the pivotal points of the jaws varying, wherebyone of said jaws travels in a path not described by the other of said jaws.
The detail construction of my improved wrench will he presently descrlhed and then s e'cifically pointed out in the appended c aims. and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals ofreference designate corresponding arts throughout the several views, in whic i:
Figure 1 is a view from one edge. of the improved wrench, Fig. 2- is a side elevation of the wrench illustrating the jaws in three different'posit-ions, is a view of the opposite edge of the in'iproved wrench from t tat llustrated in Fig. 1, Fig. 41s aperspective view of the one endportion of. the handle or e and 2, and a view of the other jaw.
lever, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the jaws of the wrench, Fig. 6 is a similar To put my invention i struct. my im -)roved wrench of two aws 1 liandle'or lever 3. The jaw 1 (see Fig. 6)
Specification of Letters Patent.
20, 1906. Serial No. seasons.
' 2 is pivotally niountet plates nto practice, I con-- has one end bifurcated and i pierced, as at 4, wlnle its opposite end 15 out i aw Patented" 7 having transveiseopenings 8 forine there- The aw 2 has its one end bifurcated recessed as at 11 and provided with a. threaded opening 12 leading from "he bottom of the recess. The jaw 2 intermediate its ends is provided with a web portion 14 having 1 an opening 15 formed therein. The handle or lever 3 has a segment-shaped end 16, which is provided witha segment-shaped- ,slot lTjand an opening 18, the slot 17 extending at an angle to the longitudinal plane of the handle. The web portion 1-1 of the jaw.
bifurcated enlargement 7 of thejaw 1, by a pin or rivet 1t), thus connecting the two jaws together, whereby the cut away ends of said jaws can be brought into close proximity to one another. The bifurca ed and ierced end 401 the jaw 1 is loosely connectet to the segment-shaped end 16 of the handle or lever 3 by a pin or rivet 20. which passes through the slot 17 of 'thehandle or lever.
The pierced bifurcated end 9 of the'jaw 2 is ivotally connected to the segment shaped end 16' of the handle or lever3 by a pin or rivet 21. Seating in the cut away ends of the jaws 1 and 2 are toothed or serrated 22, the rear face of one of saidplates having an enlargement 23 adapted to fit in the recess 11 of the jaw 2. The plates 22 are retained in engagenientwith the jaws 1 and 2 by screws 2-1, secured in the threaded o enings 6 and 12 of said jaws. In usin t e plates 22, I am enabled to remove and renew the same when they have become worn, thus in'creasingthe efficiency of my -im )roved wrench.
in Fig. 2 of the drawing, I have illustrated a wrench in full lines as having its jaws closed, and to open thesan-ie itis necessary that oneof the jaws be gripped or placed in engagement with an object. Assuming that this has been done, the handle or lever 3 is moved, and owing to the-fact that the distance between the pivotal points ofone jaw is shorter than between the pivotal points of the other jaw, a movement of the handle or lever 3 to. the right will tendto force the jaws rearwardly, the jaw 2 moving faster thanthe 1, whereby the aws will be thrown open,
away as at 5 and provided with :athreaded v Anusox, j opening 6 The jaw intermediate its ends 15 citizen of the UmtedStates of America, rel-formed with an enlarged bifurcated )ortlon' in the intermediate when the limit of their moveinent is reached.
. A rewferse movement of the handle or lever 3 will close the jaws.
by the dotted line's'in Fi 2, the jaw 1 moving through a greater t istance' during the operation than the jaw 2 and thereby enaging the article between the operating aces and tightly conlpressim the sanie by the strong leverage roduced hy the angular direction 111 which t e slot 17 extends. The manipulating of the handle 3 thusproduees a very strong wedglng action upon the aw the article held between the jaws.-
'ous that t'he plates 22 can be readily operated upon any flattened surfaces;
1 through its contact thereby producing a very strong grip u on his wedge like action is an important featureof the invention and adds very materially to its utility and efiicientan. r
- What I claim an desire to secure by Letters Patent; is:-'
with the pin 20, and
A wrench comprising a handle provided with an enlarged end and having a segmental slot formed therein, jaws pivotallj' connected together at their centers and free y movable,
one of the jaws pivoted to the enlarged end of the handle and a pin passing through the other jaw and segmental slot whereby the jaw obtains a gri )ping action throughout the slot by the pin earing against the wall of the slot.
- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
