To ai] -'rlmm vit may concern: A Yi Be it known that I. SE'rit L. Isin-nt. acm* v\ \"/,en of the L'nited States of .-imeriea. and a resident of St. Paul. in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.\
)iv-invention relates toV improvements in collars and more lnirticularl) to that class commonly termed holse collars. objects are to provide means on the rim roll for preventing the haine from slipping out of place and `-for reinforcing the strength of-the rim mil. Another object is to protect the seam between -the outer edge` of the back roll so as to prevent cutting ofhe seam fastenings b v friction while the collar in use, thus materially increasing its duizability and usefulness- In the accompanying drawings forming:
part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the face'of nrv improved horse collar; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the back of the horse collar; Fig. 3 is a cross section of my improved horse collar on the line X-X of Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is a detail per spective view of the protecting element of the seam fastenings of the back roll: and Figs- 5.1i, and i' are detail cross sectional views of the rim roll showing alternate means :for holding the hame in the bed between the rim and back rolls of the collar.
In the drawings A represents the rim roll and B the back roll of a holse collar. These rolls are provided with the usual filling material '2 such as straw and ate formed with a haine hed C in the usual manner by stitching or otherwise fastening at 3 thev pieces o1' leather 1: 5, and 6. together. Immediael)v adjoining the haine bed C on the rim roll a longitudinal ridge or detent D is formed b v creasing the piece of leather 4 and whip sewing thong 7 of raw hide or cord of suitable material throughout thelength of said ridge. This ridge as constructed is adapted to assist in holding the haine in its bed t' on the collar and prevents the haine from slipping out- The thong or cord T protects the surface ot" the ridge from wearing and abrasion and with the ridge reinforces the strength of the rii'n roll. ,The ridge I) can lie constructed Among its' .'Speef'cation o Letters Patent.

ridge I). are fastened together b v rivets 9 and in Fig. T the thong 1() of raw hide is chain stitched throt fh the la ps of the ridge D instead of being whipped around the ridge as illustrated in the preferred construction.
The back roll of the collar is provided with a faire lining E of felt or other suitable material which liningr has an edge 11 projecting out ot' the. back roll between the outer edges of its leather walls 1. and 13. The lining E is provided with projecting points 14 along its einer edgel and the laps of the stitching 15 pass through interstic-es 16 between l these points i forming the seam between the outer edges 12 `1nd 13 of the back roll. T he points 14 protect the seam of the back roll against cutting and abrasion of the seam fastenings b v friction while the collar is in use. T he stitching 15 is preferably made by whip sew ing a raw hide. thong or other suitable cord througn the edges of the'walls of leather forniing the back roll, the inner laps of said thong pass g through tho bod)` of the lining E and the wiener laps passing through the interstices 1G between theI points 14 of the. projectingY edge of said lining.
In accordance with the )atent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of in v invention, together with the construction which I now consider to represent the. best'l embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrativer and that the invention can be carried out by other means and a )plied to uses other than those. above sot. fortli, within the str-ope, of the following claims.
Having described my invention7 what. I claim :is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent. is
1- A horse collar provided attho outer seam of its, large roll with aseries of points proie nig out of said seam and scoured directi :herein between the outer edge of the collar back and the outer edge of the collar face. said points projecting from between the fastenngs constituting thel seam, for the purposes specified.
\ horse collar provided with a lining of material between the collar back and ce of the back roll, said lining profroin within said back roll and be,-
in various ways within the spirit of my invenl twee; the edges of the collar face and collar tion. In Fig. 5 it formed b v chain stltchback, the progooting edge, of said lining having a thread at. S through the laps of the ing a series o' points and a cord of raw hide In Fig. 6 the laps of the ridge I).
soV
or other Vsuit able material whip sewed through the outer edges of the collar back and collar face and saidlining, the outer laps of said cords passing between the interstices of said points, for the purposes specified.
3. In a collar of the class set forth, a seam i formed between the. front face and bac-k face of one of its rolls, said seam constltutxng the outer edges of the faces of said roll7 a serles of points projecting from between said edges7 and fastenings passing through said edges and the interstices between said points, for the. purposes specified.
4. in aeollar of the class set forth, a seam J. W. DAHLGREN, F. G. BRADBURY.
