IMPROVEMENT IN SURCINGLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.1 74,478, dated March 7, 1876; application filed May 11, 1875.
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of my improved surcingle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the center of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line w w of Fig. 1.
My invention consists in a surcingle made from a web woven of double thickness, at one or more portions of its length, to receive padding or stuffing, the remaining portions being solid or of single thickness, which construction greatly facilitates the application of the padding, and at the same time increases the durability of the surcingle and reduces its cost.
To enable others-skilled in the art to understand and use myinvention, I will proceed to describe the manner in. which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents a surcingle, formed of a woven web of suitable width, length, thickness, and material, to one end of which-is secured the buckle, a, and to the opposite end the strap b. The portions 0 of the web (which may be'ot' any desired length) are'woven of single .thickne'ss, while the portion d, at one side of the center, is woven double, or of tubular form, (the loom being adapted for the purpose,) so as to leave a pocket or space for the reception of the padding or stuffing e, of tow, wool, hair, or other suitable material, which is introduced through an opening, f, and so disposed as to form two separate pads, which, when the surcingle is applied to a horse, fit one on each side of the backbone.

The opening or openings through which the stuflin g material is introduced may be formed by a knife or other instrument, or may be formed, like buttonholes, in the operation of weaving, either on the flat surface of the web or along its edge, at any suitable point or points, so as to communicate with the pocket or pockets.
By weaving a surcingle with a pocket or pockets, as above described, the operation of padding is greatly facilitated, while the cost of the article'is reduced and its durability greatly increased.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
