SKIRT.`
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Applicatiemled June 4, 1908. Serial No. 436,569.
To all whom it may concern.' l
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States,
York city, Bronx, county I' and State of New York, have invented new I' and useful Improvements in Skirts, of which the following 1s a This invention relates to an improved i skirt and more particularly to novel means for gathering the skirt at the back thereof, so that the sizeof the waist may be readily changed and the skirt may be tted to different figures.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 isa side view of a skirt-embodying my Invention; Fig. 2 an outer view of the top of the skirt-back; Fig. 3 an inner view thereof, showing the skirt gathered; Fig. 4 a detail -outlets, and Fig. 5 an enlar ed section on ine 5-5, Fig. 2.
A sgkirt 10'having a placket 11, at its side, is provided atits waist line with a fold 12 formin -a pocket that extends around the rear ha of the skirt. This pocket is divided by a central suture 13, into an up' er passageA 14 and a lower passage 15 adapted) for the reception of a continuous shirring Nearjts center, lower passage 15 is provided l with two inwardly opening spaced apertures 17,`reinforced by eyelets 18 and adapted for I' the escape of the string ends. To permit the string to pass from lower passage 15 into upj per assage 14, there is provided, at each end l of t ve pocket, a double eyelet 19 secured to the rear-or outer side of the garment and communicating with each of the passages. l he shirring string 16 is inserted in such a way that its ends 1.6, 16h, will cross within I lower passagel 15 inter/mediate the centrali eyelets 18. hus, commencing at end 16a, the string passes throu h left eyelet 18, right s ide'o passage 15, an( right eyelet 19, into upper passa e 14, and thence through left eyelet 19, le t side of passage 15, an right eyelet 18, out as at 16h. When the free ends of the string are drawn i l shirred to any extent desired, the I im arted to specification. I
out, the entire back of the skirt may be shape so it becoming fixed by tying the en s of the string. During this manipulation, any objectionable bulging, in a longitudinal direction, will be prevented.
It will be seen that by my invention, skirts may b e readily fitted to figures of different sizes, and that the wearer is enabled to tighten or loosen the skirt to suit her convenience.
I claim:
1. A skirt provided with a pocket extending along the rear waist line, a pair of open,- ings at each end thereof, a vpair of openings at the center, and a shirring string engaging said pocket and openings, substantially as specified.
2. A skirt provided with a pair of passages extending along the rear waist line, an opening at the end of each passage, a pair ot' openings at the center of one of said passages, and a shirring stringengaging said passages and openings, substantially as specified.
3. A skirt provided with a pair of passages extending along the rear waist line, an opening at the end of' each passage, a pair otl spaced openings at the center of one ot' said passages, and a shirring string engaging said passages and openings, the ends ol" said string being crossed within its passage intermediateI the central openings, substantially as speeified.
4. A skirt provided with a'pair of passages extending along the rear waist line, a double eyelet connecting the passages at each end, a pair of spaced eyelets at the center of one. ot' said passages, and a shirring string engaging said assages and eyelets, substantially as speci led.
Signed by ine at New York city, (Manhattan,) N. Y., this 3rd day ofJune, 1908.
ALEXANDER M. SCHNEIDER.
