Description
A. MACDONALD. WINDOW GATGH. APPLICATION FILED AUG.12, 1907.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALAN MACDONALD, OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed August 12, 1907. Serial No. 388,184.
VVindow-Catch, of which the following is a,
specification.
This invention relates to window catches.
The object of the invention consists in the production of a device of the character described which will be simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to install and maintain. 7
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arran ement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the severalviews, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmental perspective view of the upper and lower sashes of a window with the invention applied to the upper sash and in looking position; the lower sash being shown locked against further upward movement; Fig. 2, a fragmental longitudinal section showing the catch closed so as to permit of full movement of the sashes; Fig. 3, a fragmental front elevation of the catch and Window sashes in a position similar to that described in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of the catch.
In the drawing 1 re resents the upper window sash and 2 the lbwer window sash. The catch is secured to the sash on the inner face of one of the vertical sides of said sash at a distance from the up er horizontal side of the lower sash equiva ent to the distance it is desired to permit the lower sash to be moved upward before it is locked by the catch against further movement. The catch is comprised of male and female wings 3 and 4' respectively and pivot one upon another through the medium of interlocking recesses and fingers with registering apertures; a pin 5 passing through the apertures and locking the wings together after the manner of a spring 8 to the position shown in Fig. 2
hinge. The male wing 3 is provided with eyelets 6 through which screws 7 pass and secure the catch to the upper sash 1. A spring arm 8 protrudes outwardly and upwardly from the lowest eyelet 6 and normally forces the female wing 4 outwardly at approximately right angles to the male wing, in whichposition the catch is in looking relation with respect to the upper and lower sashes. The female wing 4 is provided with an up wardly and inwardly projecting finger 9 which serves as a finger hold to deflect the whereby the wings of the catch are closed one upon another and the sashes rendered free to move up and down throughout the entire window frame.
The operation of the device will be obvious for when the window is in closed position the catch will assume the position shown in Fig. 1 and the sashes will be limited in their up and down movement by the catch. When it is desired to open the window to its full extent the catch is closcd as shown in Fig. 2 through the medium of the finger 9 when a further movement upward of the lower sash or downward movement of the upper sash will lock the female member against the male member and permit a complete opening of the window.
In the drawing accompanying this application, there is shown apractical embodiment of the invention, and in describing the invention in detail reference has been made to said drawing, but it is to be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction shown, since it will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the same as defined in the claims.
I claim:
The combination with the upper and lower sashes of a window of a catch adapted to limit the downward movement of the upper sash and the upward movement of the lower sash; said catch comprising hinged wings one of which is secured to the upper sash and a spring located between the wings adapted to throw the free wing into the path of travel of the lower sash and an upwardly projecting In testimony whereof I have signed my finger on the free wing adapted to be utilized name to this specification in the presence of to press the free wing parallel to the fixed two subscribing witnesses.
wing against the influence of the spring ALAN MACDONALD. 5 whereby the upper and lower sashes may be In presence of moved up and down to the full extent of the J OSEPH B. MANN,
window frame. PHILIP B. Voonnnns.
