UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE RICHARD M. HOLLINGSHEAD, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
SCREW-CAP.
Application filed August 2, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD M. HOLLINGS- HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Screw-Cap, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a screw cap for a can, bottle, or other receptacle, the same being provided with a washer or gasket within the same, and means for seating said gasket and causing it to be firmly held against the same, forming a tightly closed and hermetically sealed joint for the cap with the article to which it is applied.
It also consists of novel means for convenientl y and easily unscrewing the cap from its position.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a screw cap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section thereof, including the adjacent portion of a can to which the cap is applied. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of detached parts.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :'A designates a screw cap, and B designates the neck of a can or other receptacle to which the same is fitted. On the side of the cap is the inturned bead A, which forms the groove 0 on the in terior of said cap.
D designates a concavo-convex disk of somewhat pliable metal or material, which is placed within the cap A and having its peripheral portion seated in the groove C, said disk owing to its concavo-convex shape being sprung or flexed into said groove, the convex face of the disk being below.
E designates a washer or gasket somewhat of flexible or yielding material preferably linoleum or cork, which is also placed within the cap A and rested against the disk D and sustained by the latter, said gasket being deflected to the contour of the contiguous face of the disk D and also having its peripheral portion sprung into said groove, both disk and gasket thus being firmly retained in the cap. It will now be seen that when the cap is screwed to the neckB, the gasketE contacts with the top edge of the latter and is forced tightly a ainst the disk D, and the latter is subjected to the pressure of said gasket, and so is expanded and tightlyseated upon the shoulder formed by the upper Wall of the Specification of Letters Patent.

groove C, said Wall thus forming an abso= lutely tight joint for said cap and neck.
In the side of the cap are openings F, which are preferably opposite to each other and designed to receive a pin or other implement, whereby the cap, otherwise difficult to remove, may be conveniently and easily turned for unscrewing purposes, the effect of which is evident.
It will be noticed that the portion of the interior of the cap above the shoulder C is unoccupied, forming the chamber G, with which the openings F are in communication, and thus the pin or implement, as aforesaid inserted in the openings F, may pass entirely through the interior of the cap, and said pin or implement being adapted to bear simul taneously against the walls of both openings, will not slip from its operative position nor bend or break when in use. It will be noticed also that the cap has a closed top H, the same being flat, whereby it is available for the application of a label lithographed, printed or otherwise produced, and said top may be conveniently cleaned.
While I have specified certain means for carrying out my improvements, I do not wish to be limited exactly to the same, but desire to make such changes as may come within the scope of the novelty involved.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A screw cap of the character stated having a groove in the side of the interior thereof, a downwardly convex disk adapted to be peripherally seated in said groove, and a downwardly convex gasket adapted to be sustained on the underside of said disk and having the peripheral portion seated in said groove.
2. Ascrew cap of the character stated having Within the same a disk and a gasket thereunder, said disk being convex on its under face and being adapted to be peripherally seated on a shoulder within the cap, and said gasket being adapted to be sustained on the convex face of said disk, said cap having a closed top, and said side having openings therethrough.
3. A screw cap of the character stated having a body provided with a groove in the inner face of the side thereof, and a downwardly convex disk, and a downwardly convex gasket, both within said body imposed one upon the other, said groove forming a ripheral portions seated in said groove, said 10 common seating for the peripheral portions body having a chamber therein,'and an openof said gasket and disk. ing in the side, said chamber and opening 4. A screw cap consisting of a body oombeing above said disk.
