TEXTILE-FABRIC cowm.
Specificati'on of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
Application filed January 8, 1907. Serial No. 351,294.
Be it known that I, FRANK B. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Textile-Fabric Cov-' ers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acoompanyingdrawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, generally, to textile fabrics which are used more especially for ornamental urposes, such as covers for upright pianos, ambrequins, and the like, such covers having overhanging portions. which extend from the marginal edge or edges of the cover when arranged upon the piece of furniture, or the like; such portions usually projecting in a hinge-like manner down thefront and sides of the article or piece of furniture; and, the invention relates, more especially, to a novel piano-cover, or
the like, which. is provided with a welt or over lock edge or portion extending slightly above the upper face of the cover, to provide a rigid or stiff edge or rib along one edge of the cover, providing thereby a perfect overhang of the downwardly extending art.
T 1e invention, therefore, has for its principal object to rovide a simple, neat and novel cover of tfie general character hereinafter more fully set forth, which is especially adapted for a piano-cover, the arrangement and construction of its parts being such, that the cover can be laced or fitted in its position without the east trouble or the necessity of having to cut the same to size, so as to fit the cover in place; and, furthermore, to provide the cover with the overhanging arts which act as retaining devices which liold the cover in place and revent it from slipping about the-usually 'ghly polished surface of the article of manufacture.
With the various objects of my present invention in view, this invention consists in the novel cover for use with pianos, or as a lambrequin, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an upright piano provided with a cover made ac Y cording to the principles of the present invention. Fig.2 is a front face view of a ortion of the cover, on anenlarged scale; ig. 3 is atop or plan view of the'same, and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section of said cover. Figs. 5 and 6 are 'two detail views of the front and rearfaces of portions of the cover,
showing on an enlarged scale, the overlook stitching used for producing a rigid rib.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding-parts.
Referrin now to the said drawings, the reference-c ara'cter 1 indicates any suitable piece of furniture, such as an upright piano, or the like, and 2 indicates the textile fabric cover therefor, said cover being made according to the principles of my present invention.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, it will be seen that the cover 2 comprises a main body-portion or top 3, said top having along its front marginal edge a downwardly extending portion 4, termed herein an overhang, the said over hang in its length being much shorter than the length of said main body or top3, whereby two end-portions or overhangs Sand 6 are provided, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 1, 2 and 4 of the drawings. Along its lower edgeportion, the said overhang 4 may be of any suitable marginal configuration, as 7, the same being bounded by an overlook stitch 8, and alon its end-edges 9, the said overhang is similar y bounded by an overlook stitch 10.
Along the front marginaledge-portion 11 of the main body-portion or top 3, Where the overhang 4 is integrally connected with said bodyportion -or top, the fabric is doubled upon itself, as at 12, and the doubled-over part is sewed or stitched with an over-lock stitch 13, said over-lock stitch also extending down the front marginal edges 14 of the overhangs 5 and 6, substantially as illustrated. The lower edge-portions of the overhangs 4, 5 and 6 may also be suitably ornamented, with braid 15 and 21: facing 16, as clearly shown.
Referring now to F' 4 of the drawings, it will be seen that by t e method of overlapping or doubling-over the parts of the fabrlc,
as at 12, a stiff ridge or welt is produced which not only provides an ornamental finish between the top .and the front overhang of the cover, but also produces a substantially rigid or stiff edge, whereby the front overhang extends downwardly at right angles to the top when the cover is placed upon the article of furniture, and enables the cover to be easily and quickly fitted in place upon the top of the piano, with the end-overhangs extending down each end of the piano, as clearly illustrated in.Fig. 1 of the drawings.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings is more.
' At 19 the threads pass through the fabric to the other side thereof where the looped portions 20 and the slanting strands or threads 21 are formed, substantially in the manner shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
I claim:
1. A textile fabric cover comprising a main body or top-portion and a frontoverhang extending downwardly from the front marginal edge ofthe body or top-portion, said front "overhang and said body or topportion being formed with a doubled-over portion, and means connected with said douceases bled-over portion arranged to provide a substantially rigid rib.
2. A textile fabric cover comprising a main body or top-portion and a front overhang extending downwardly from the front marginal edge Tof the body or top-portion, said front overhang and said body or topportion being formed with a doubled-over portion, and an overlook stitching stitched through and over the edge of thes aid doubled-over portion to provide a substantially rigid rib.
3. A textile fabric cover comprising a main body or top-portion, a front overhang extending downwardly from the front marginal edge of the body or top-portion, and' an end overhang at each end of said main body or top-portion, said front overhang and said body or top-portion being formed with a doubled over portion, and an overlook stitching stitched through and over the edge of the said doubled-over portion to provide a substantially rigid rib.
In testimony, that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of December, 1906.
FRANK B. BURNS.
