Description

Unoauto rv WMM/.52?,
PATENTED AUG. 11, 1908. W. MULLER.
vWRENCH. APPLIGATION FILED JAN. a1, 1808.
WILLIAM MULLER, OF PITTSBURGQPENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1908.
Application led January 31, 1908. Serial No. 413,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MULLER, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Pittsburg, in the county of Alle- This invention relates to wrenches, and' the objects of my invention are, first, to provide ay strong and durable nut and pipe wrench; and second to provide a wrench wherein positive and reliable means are embodied in a movablejaw for holding said jaw in a fixed position with relation to said wrench. I attain these objects by employing a double toothed shank upon which a jaw is slidably mounted. The jaw is provided with two toothed gripping members, which are actuated through the medium of screws, these screws firmly holding the gripping members in engagement with the shank, and preventing the jaw from moving when the wrench is being used upon an object. The movable jaw is also provided with a tilting pipe gri ping jaw face.
The c etail construction entering into my.
invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordane with my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of a wrench illustrating the movable jaw thereof in section, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line -x of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow of said figure, and F ig. 4 is aperspective view of the tilting pipe gripping jaw face.
In the accompanying drawings, l designates a shank having teeth 2 upon its front and rear edges. This shank is provided with a iiXed jaw 3 having a straight gripping surface 4 and an angular grip ing surface 5, the former being for flat surfaces, while the latter is used for pipes and. objects having rounded surfaces. 'Ihe shank 1 is provided with a detachable handle 6 of a conventional form.
A Slidably mounted upon the shank l is a movable j aw. frame 7 having a fiat gripping surface S adapted to cooperate with the fiat gripping surface 4. Pivotally Inounted in the opposite edge of the jaw frame 7 by a pinV 9 is a bifurcated pipe gripping jaw face l0, said aw face having teeth ll for gripping rounded surfaces. These teeth project beyond the plane of the face Siand coact with the gripping face 5 of the jaw 3. y rl`he object of the bifurcation in connection withthis jaw will be presently described.
The jaw frame 7 is provided with a central opening l2 for the shank l, and the upper and lower edges of said jaw frame adjacent to said opening are recessed, as at 13. Movably mounted in the opening l2 and engaging the front and rear edges of the shank l are gripping members 14, said members being provided with teeth l5 for engaging the teeth 2 of the shank l. The upper and lower ends of the members are formed with right angular extensions I6 adapted to engage in the recesses 13, while one of said eX- tensions protrudes into the bifurcation of the tilting gripping jaw face l0.
Adjustably mounted in the front and rear edges of the jaw frame 7 are screws 17 for engaging the members I4 and holding said members in engagement with the shank l. To adjust the movable jaw, the screws 17 are slackened so that the operator, holding the jaw frame 7 in one hand, may, by forcing the shank l in either direction with the other hand, increase or decrease the space between the gripping faces 4 and 8 and 5 and ll, 4and when the desired adjustment has been obtained, screws 17 will tighten and the jaw frame 7 will be held in adjusted position.
The construction of my wrench permits of an object being gripped and firmly held, it being impossible for the jaw frame 7 to slip after the members 14 have been placed in engagement with the double toothed shank l.
It is apparent that my wrench serves functionally as an ordinary monkey wrench and a pipe wrench.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
In a wrench, a shank carrying a fixed aw and provided on opposite sides with teeth, a movable jaw having a central opening to receive the shank and having recesses at each end thereof, toothed gripping members said gripping members for holding them in able jaw to engage the opposite toothed surengagement with the teeth of the shank. 10 'faces of said shank, the said gripping-mem- In testimony whereof I affix my signature bers being of the same length as the j aw and i in the presence of two witnesses.
