- I ys'rarns PATENT onnrcn.
FRANK FLEMIXG, OF ,ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS. j
To all h-omit may cvncem:
Be it known that I, F RANK FLEMING, a citizen of t-he United States of America, residing at Rockford, in the county 0f 'innebago and State of Illinois, have invented cery tain new and useful Improvements in Build- .y ing-Directorles, of wlnch the following is a "\.\specicat1on.
My invention relates to a building directory particularly intended for use in office buildings where there are numerous tenants, zmd, whcre it is desired to provide a directory in such form that the names therein may be changed as often as necessitated by changes of tenants; and it consists of certain new and useful features of construction and combinations of parts especially de\vised to that end, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed-out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front View of a. directory embodying my improvements. Fig. '2-,is a section, at the dotted line 2-2 in Fig. 1, of parts there shown. same, with parts wanting and other parts in different positions. Fig. 4 is an isometrical detail view of one of the clamping-leaves of the directory. Fig. 5 is a section, at the dotted line 5-5 in Fig. 1, of parts there shown with other parts wanting. Fig. 6 is a like view of the same, with parts in different positions.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
7 and 8 are the side pieces, and 9 and 10 the top and bottom pieces, of the frame. The two latter have recesses 11 formed there'- in for the reception of parts to be described hereinafter. The parts of the framev may be secured together in any suitable manner and Vhave a back 12 securely attached thereto.
The united arts just described constitute a holder for tie remaining parts of the direc'- tory.
13 are clamping-leaves pivotally mounted within the holder substantially parallel to the back 12 thereof and to each other. These leaves are shown as being mounted by means of pintles 14 thereon inserted into sockets 15 in the parts 9 and 10, but they may obviously be pivoted into the holder in any other available and desired manner, the only requisites, being that they shall occupy the proper relative positions to the back of the holder and to each other and be adapted to be opened v Speccation o! outward to admit the name-plates, to be described, and closed upon their end portions to cla-mp them against the back of the saine.
16 are springs shown as secured between the parts 9, 10 and 12 and as project-ing their operative portions into the recesses 11 in said parts 9 and 10. T hese springs normally maintain the leaves 13' closed upon the end portions of the name-plates, to be described, and clamp lthe same against the back 12 of the holder, as in Figs. l and 5.
17 are name-plates, which are preferably composed of thin flexible strips of pasteboard. Upon these plates the desired names and numbers may .be marked in any suitable manner.
18, 19, 2O and 21 are the top, bottom and side pieces of a frame which is glazed with a sheet of glass 22. The parts just described constitute the closure, of the holder, which is of proper dimensions to be slid into and seated in the rectangular opening .23 in the front of the same, where it may be secured in any desired manner. Y,
Supposing the closure of the holder to be removed therefrom and the'clamping-leaves 13 to both be opened to the position shown b the left hand leaf 172, in Fig. 6, the namep ates 17 are then placed against the back 12 of the holder and the leaves 13 are swung in against the end portions of the same, Figs. 1 and 5, where they will remain securely` clamped by the action of the springs 16. Obviously the leaves 13 maybe opened whenever desired and the name-plates in the directory be `changed or rearranged in any dcsired manner.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
In a directory of the class describrd, in combination, a frame and back therefor. constituting a holder, clamping-leaves pivotally mounted within the holder substantially parallel to the back thereof and to each other, name-plates and springs normally maintaining the leaves closed upon the end ortions of said name-plates and clamplng tie same against the back of the holder. l
In testimony whereof I have signed'my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
"FRANK FLEMING.
