Letters Patent No. 89,496, dated April 27 1869;
IIWPROVED FABRIC FOR CHAIR-SEATS, 8cc.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all wlwm yit may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. OWEN, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of Gonneoticut, have inventeda new Improvement in Chair- Seats; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, to be a.- full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this speciication, and represents a sectional view.
This invention relates to an improvement in the seating or foundation for the seating of common chairs, the object being to produce a non-elastic but exible seating over which upholstering may be placed, or which may itself answer for the seat; and
The invention consists in combining two thicknesses of duck, canvas, or similar material, secured together by a cement, compounded as follows':
Take of common wood-glue, one pound; boiled linseed-oil, one ounce; and common wood-ashes, one tablespoonful; the glue being dissolved in the usual manner, and to about the consistency usually employed for gluing wood surfaces, and while the glue is hot -add the oil and ashes, mix together, and simmer until thoroughly mixed, .then coat the meeting surfaces of the fabric, and press them together until thoroughly dry.
The cement, while it securely attaches the two fabrics, is, from the nature of the composition, flexible, but when the fabrics are secured together they are made positively non-elastic.
I have added paper between the twofabrics, but do not consider it any advantage, merely mentioning the fact here as a part of my experiments.
The material, being thoroughly dry, is cut into the proper form, and secured in any vdesirable manner to the chair-frame, either as a seating or as a foundation for upholstering.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe fabric for chair-seating, herein described, con'- sisting of the fabrics united by the cement, as herein set forth, as an article of manufacture.
JAMES W. OWEN. vWitnesses:
J. H. SHUMWAY, A. J. Tll'rs.'
