. ROLL-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 4, 1908.
Application filed November 9, 1907. Serial No. 401,621.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CURTIS J. RojrnEnM'EL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Hope, inthe county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Roll-Protector, of which the followingr is a specification.
This invention relates to roll protectors for use upon the ends of rolls of roofing material such as felt, tar paper, tin, etc.
The object of the invention is to provide caps for the ends of va roll and which are shaped to fit within the roll opening so as to brace the ends of the roll and prevent.V the roll' from becoming crushed.
Another object is to rovide end caps deby a single flexible device disposed to be non-detachably secured to one of the caps, the other cap having means for temporarily engaging said connecting means so as to lhohl the parts in proper relation.
A still further object is to rovide caps having their edge portions so nished that they wil not bite in to'or otherwise mar the material forming the roll to lwhich the caps are applied. requiring the use of device, the from one of said protector can be conveniently removed from the roll.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts same being readily detachable which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings is shown the preferrred form of the invention.
In said drawin s: Figure 1 is a vertical section showing t e protector applied to a y, Fig. 2 is a 4plan view of the protector. Fig. 3 is a similar View. of the lower cap of the protector. Fig'. 4 is an enlarged section'through one edge portion of one of the caps.
Referring to the figures by4 characters of reference, 1 designates a roll of roofing material, the same being provided with the usual opening 2 through the center thereof and the protector constituting the present invention 1s designed to be placed upon the ends of the roll and within said opening. This protector consists of two preferably circular disks 3 and nother object is to provide a protector but a single connecting` the caps of the protector 4so thatl into the opening. Apertures 7 are formed within the central portion of one of the caps while the depressed portion of the'other ca i has oppositely extending tongues 8 struck therefrom, there being a'n opening 9 formed between the tongues as shown. ing device 10 preferably of wire has one end portion inserted through the openings 7 and twisted so as to form a positive connection with the cap 4. The other end of this conecting device is designed to be extended throughout the opening 2 and aperture 9 and after it has been pulled taut so as to bind the two caps upon the ends of the roll the same is wrapped around and under Athe tongues t5 after which said tongues can be pressed inwardly so as to bind upon the flexible device 10 and prevent it from slipping.
As indicated in Fig. 1 receptacles 11 may A connectbe placed within the' opening 2, the same bev ing designed to hold the various articles necessary to secure the material of the roll upon a roof. Where these receptacles are used the flexible device 10 is extended between them and the wall of the opening 2. the receptacles 11 are not employed the device 10 ea'n'be extended on a straight line from one eapto the other.
A roll structure such as hereinbefore described is particularly designed for use in connection with rolls of paper, felt, etc.
What is claimed is:v
The combination with a roll having a central openim1r extending therethrough; of circular disks lbearing upon the ends of the roll, each .disk being formed in a single piece of metal having an inwardly struck circular central portion or depression projecting into the opening, the depressed portion of one of the disks having a pairof apertures in the bottom thereof and the depressed portion of. the other. disk having a central aperture and oppositely extending outstruck tongues integral with the disk, the peripheralportion of each disk being rolled and constituting a bearing bead, and a flexible connection be` If, however,
