FRUIT-JAR OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908.
Application led. May 6, 1907. Serial No. 372,021.
T o all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. GIVENs, acitizen of the United States of America,
'residing at Enterprise, in the county of Owyhee and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Openers, of which the following is a specication.`
This invention relates to fruit jar openers, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a fruit 'ar opener of simple construction which will accommodate itself to various sizes of jar caps, and which will provide a long lever forturning the cap.
Another object of the invention is to provide .a compound tool for removing jar caps, opening cans, cutting wire, removing corks from bottles, for pulling tacks or nails, and to provide a screw driver.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a compound tool made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the opposite side of the tool from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the tool.
' Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates one of the handles of the tool, said handle being provided with a rigid jaw member 2, and 8 is the other handle of the tool provided with a rigid arm 4 to which is pivoted a jaw member 5, said jaw member beingl connected by a pivot pin 6 to the arm 4, being disposed on the under side of said arm 4 and its lower side lying in a-eommon plane with the lower side of the jaw member 2. Secured to' the jaw member 42 is a can opener blade 7. The two handles 1 and 3 are pivotally connected upon a pin 8, and wire cutter jaws 9 are formed upon the handle members, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The outer end of the handle member 1 is provided with a curved claw 10 for withdrawing tacks or staples, and the handle member 3 terminates in a screw driver 11. A corkscrew 12 is pivoted upon a pin 13 and can be swung into a recess 14 in the handle member 3 when not required for use.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the movable jaw member 5 will accommodate itself to fruit jar caps of different sizes, while the handles 1 and 3 furnish alon lever for turning the cap, and that the too as a whole, is very convenient for various uses about a kitchen, while the construction is simple and the device can be produced at comparatively slight cost.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
The herein described fruit jar opener comprising a pair of handles pivotallyl connected together, one having a segmental jaw to bear against one side of the fruit jar cap and the other having an arm and a segmental jaw on the under side of said arm, pivotally connected thereto and disposed opposite the first mentioned jaw, the said arm having a portion rentrant to the circle bounded by the opposing jaws and lying above the plane of the same, thus serving to lie on the top of the cover or cap and cause said jaws to be applied to opposite sides of the cover or cap above the screw threaded portion thereof.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT J. GIVENS.
Witnesses z G. F. YANKE, G. W. LAMsoN.
