MATTI SARVALLA AND PETER J. ZEIEN, OF DEKALB, ILLINOIS..
COMBINED CAN AND JAR OPENER.
To all whom zlr' may concern:
Be it known that we, MATTI SARVALLA and PETER J. ZEIEN, citizens of the United. States, residing at Dekalb, in the county of Dekalb, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Can and Jar Opener; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined can and jar openers; and the object thereof is to provide a compound tool of that nature which will be adapted either to be used in connection with cans of any size or shape to cut out the -top thereof or with a fruit-j ar of the type having a metallic top to lift said top therefrom. The device is likewise 'constructed to admit of its use in connection with jars of any size.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, specifically pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved compound tool. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Similar parts are designated by corresponding reference-numerals in the several views.
In the drawings, 6 designates the handle of the compound tool, which is .provided with a screw-threaded stem 7.
The tool proper consists of an upper plate (referred to as a whole by numeral S) and a lower plate, (designated 9,) the upper plate being slidably mounted upon said lower plate.
- Plate S is provided, adjacent what may be termed its inner end, with a headed rivet 10, projecting through plates S and 9 and provided with a collar 11, having an internally-screw-threaded opening through which the screw-threaded stem 7 ofthe handle of the tool passes. The other end of plate 8 is provided with the oppositely-disposed claws 12 and with a centering beak or projection 13, located between said claws.
The lower plate 9 is provided with a downward extension 14, rigidly fastened in any preferred way to handle 6, said extension 14 Specification of Letters Patent.

being likewise provided with an opening alining with the opening in the threaded collar 11 to admit of the passage of the handle-stem therethrough.
Collar 11 is provided with a shoulder portion 16, extending from its upper surface through a slot 17, extending longitudinally of plate 9 and providing a seat for the lower end of rivet 10. It will thus be seen that by rotating handle 6 in one direction or the other plate S will be correspondingly moved along the upper face of plate 9 by means of the threaded connection of its collar 11 with the screw-threaded stem of the handle, such movement being permitted by means of the shoulder 16 of the collar 11 traveling in slot 17 of the lower plate, The outer end of plate 9 is provided with a pair of oppositelyfacing claws 18, bent in a direction opposite to that of claws 12. rlhe under face of said plate is likewise provided with a downwardlyextending V-shaped cutting-blade 19, the opposite edges of which are sharpened to admit of a cutting action when moved in one direction or the other.
A self-drop dog 21 is provided adjacent the inner edge of the upper face of plate 8, approximately intermediate the inner and outer ends thereof, the under surface of said dog having serrations 22 thereon. A slot 23 is provided in plate 8 adjacent dog 21 to admit of the same being moved into contact with the lower plate 9, the upper face of said plate adjacent said slot being likewise serrated, as at 24. The serrations 24 are slightly inclined in the direction of the outer end of the tool to admit of easy movementof the dog thereover when the upper plate is moved outwardly along the under plate; but when the position of the two plates are adjusted with respect to each other the opposite inclination of the serrations will assist in preventing any further longitudinal movement of said plates.
The claws 12, formed on the plate 8, are used in connection with the oppositely-bent claws 18, formed on the plate 9, in removing the caps of fruit and similar jars, the tool being placed across the j ar-cap with the two sets of claws disposed on opposite sides of the cap. f The handle is then rotated to cause the cover to be clamped between the claws by the movement of the sliding plate, when the cap may be unscrewed by rotating the tool, as will be understood.
IOS
The plate 8, as will be apparent from thc drawings, Inay be regarded as including a lower section 25 and a ilat upper section or body portion 26, connected therewith by the inclined portion 27, while the plate 9 may in like inanner be regarded as includ ing the flat body portion 29 and bent portion 28, the
body portions of said plates being in direct i contact with each other, as shown.
It is obvious from the above that the device may be used in connection in any size or shape of cans and that any-size opening lnay be cut therein. The device is equally applicable to fruit-j ars of any size.
The operation of the device in both uses will be obvious and it is thought that Jfurther description thereof is unnecessary.
Slight changes inay be inade in the size, material, and construction of the various parts and in other Ininor details without departing from the scope of the invention.
What is claiined is- A can-opener comprising a handle provided with a threaded stein; a lower plate rigidly secured to said stein and including a flat body portion provided with a slot eX- tending longitudinally thereof, the upper face of said plate being serrated adjacent said slot 3 a traveling collar carried by said stein and provided with a shoulder extending through said slot, an upper plate including a Hat body portion movable directly along the upper face of said lower plate in contact therewith and connected with the shoulder on said traveling collar, said upper plate being provided with a slot disposed directly above the slot in said lower plate; a dog pivotally secured to said upper plate within the slot therein, said dog having a serrated under face adapted to engage the serrated face of said lower plate, to hold said upper plate in adjusted position; a centering-beak carried by said upper plate and a cutting-blade carried by the lower plate. In testnnony whereor1 we aHiX our signatures in presence oi two witnesses.
