UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIK WATTNE, OF STAVANGER, NORWAY.
COMBINED TIN-CAN OPENER AND KNIFE AND FORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,740, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed December 10, 1900. Serial No. 39,458. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDRIK WATTNE, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Stay-anger, Norway, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Oombined Tin-Can Opener and Knife and Fork, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved implement combining in its construction means for openi ngtin cansand other hermetically-sealed similar packages anda knife and fork for extracting the contents of said can and handling the same for use, the object being to provide an improved device of this description which is particularly designed to be used for said purpose on a field in military operations or campaigns, picnics, and other outdoor gatherings; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts of the device, whereby said object is attained, all as hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is aside elevation of a combined can-opener and knife and fork embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but showing the fork portion of the device carried to a position beyond one end of the can-opening part thereof for a purpose herein described.
Referring to the drawings, (1 indicates a piece of suitable metal plate, preferably of steel, of a flat handle-like form in border outline, and e a longitudinal section of said plate partially separated therefrom, as shown, and flexibly connected thereto at f. Said handlelike part 01 has a slot 0 extending inwardly from one end, and the extremity o of the part of said handle one side of said slot constitutes a fulcrum for the can-opener part of the device, as below described; The part a. of said handle dis the can-cutting element thereof and terminates in a sharp point 19 for piercing a part of a can, and the edge thereof opposite said extremity 0 is sharpened, so as to properly out said can part when the handlelike part (1 is swung upon its said fulcrum extremity 0, as is usual with said implements.
To provide a suitable cutting or knife part on the said part (1, the border w thereof is suitably sharpened. This can be done without inconvenience to the operator for the reason that when the said point I) of the said part a is entered into a can for opening it the force for effecting the cutting by the knifeedge on the part a is exerted against the border at z of the part d or against the shank part of the longitudinal section or fork 2, when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 1, thereby swinging the lower end of the handle in the direction indicated by the arrow under each figure. Said longitudinal section 6 of said plate or handle-like part d has the general fork form shown and has on its extremity several fork-tines 'i, and it normally occupies the position relative to the said handle part shown in Fig. 1; but after a can has been opened, as described, said section 6 is for the purpose of use upon the can contents swung over to the position shown in Fig. 2, the flexibility of the metal at f, between said parts (1 and e, permitting the fork part to be so swung without disturbing the attachment of the two parts one to the other.
If desired, the border of the handle cl opposite the portion 2 thereof may also be provided with more or less of a knife-edge, as shown at h on said border.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In an implement of the class described, a part serving both as a handle and as a knife having one longitudinal cutting edge, a slot in one end thereof on one border of'which is a can-cutting part, and a fork connected to, and occupying, normally, a position opposite one border of said handle-knife and adapted to have the forked end thereof swung from said handle-border to a position for use beyond the can-cutting extremity of said handle, substantially as set forth.
FREDRIK WATTNE.
