Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SHIELDS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Montreal, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buttons, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a button with a hinged head, said head being of such contour and being pivoted to a post in such a manner that the head can be easily inserted in a button hole of a stifl ly starched neck-band or cuff.
Another object of the invention is to provide a button with a hinged head, the head being of substantially ovoid shape-and provided with a groove in its underside to form a recess for the post of the button when said button head is turned into alinement with said post on either side thereof, for inserting the head into a button-hole.

Referring to the drawings for a more particular description ofmy invention, the numeral 1 designates the shoe of the button, 2 is the post or shank, and3, is the pivoted head.
As shown in the drawing, the button is of the collar button type, but it will be understood that a cuff button, or a button for other purposes may be made in accordance with my invention.

As shown in Fig. 4 the pintle 6 is formed integral with the button head 3 and the upper end of the post 2 may be curled around such a pintle after it has been inserted in the groove or recess 5 in an obvious manner.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a button head made in accordance with my invention, may be secured to a flat post at post may be properly secured tached to a shoe of any suitable construction.
A button made in accordance with my invention, being of simple construction, composed of comparatively few parts, can be manufactured at slight cost, 1s strong and durable, has no projecting parts to catch and injure the edges of the button-hole, can be quickly applied and removed from the button-hole, and is very efficient and reliable in use.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A button comprising a shoe, a post secured to said shoe and extending at right angles thereto, and a head pivoted. to said post, said head being substantially ovoid in contour and provided with a groove or recess in its underside extending across its major axis, said post being pivotally connected to the button head by a intle which spans said recess or groove, an that ortion of said post within the length of said 5 to he wholly within said groove or recess ead being adapted In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
