JOSEPH S. DENNY AND JAMES J. FINNEY, OF TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA.
. DOORI-SECURER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JosEPH S. DENNY and JAMES J. FINNEY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Penn sylvania, have invented new and useful 1111- rovements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to latches for doors or windows, and one of the rincipal objects of the same is to provide a etachable securing device for doors or windows which will securely hold the door or window closed, and which cannot be operated from the outside.
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable door securer of simple construction which can be readily detached from the door frame, and which will effectually hold the door closed against operation from the outside.
These and other objects may be attained by means, of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of our latch secured to a door frame. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the latch showing the latch member secured to the door. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the latch showing the position which the parts occupy when the door is locked by said latch. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the securing plate. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the latch plate and pin.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of our invention, the numeral 1 designates the securing plate provided with a series of prongs 2 cut from the body of the plate, and extending at right angles thereto. Screw holes may also be provided in the securing plate. Bearing sleeves 4, 5 are rovided u on one end of the securing ate 1, sai bearing sleeves being formed by curlin the'sheet metal and providing tubular s eeves for the pin. The sleeve 4 is provided with a shoulder 6 at one side. The latch plate 8 is provided with a central bearing sleeve 9 having a shoulder 10 at one side, a shoulder 11 at the other side, and a notch 15 in its lower edge. A keyhole slot 12 is formed in the latch plate 8. A pin 13 provided with a head 14 engages the bearing sleeves 4, 5 and 9. A coiled spring 16 surrounds the shank of the pin 13 between the head 14 and the bearing 4.
A locking s ring 17 surrounds the pintle between the s eeve 9 on the plate 8 and the sleeve 5 on the plate 1, said locking spring having an upturned end 18 which engages the notch 15 in the sleeve 9 and is provided with a finger piece 19 for operating the same.
In use the prongs 2 may be forced into the door frame I) by closing the door 0. When the door is closed the latch plate 8 is swung against the inner surface of the door, and a screw (1 secured to the door, will enter the enlarged portion of the keyhole slot 12.
When the latch plate 8 is fully forced against the door the locking spring 17 is moved until the upturned end 18 thereof is thrown out of the notch 15, and said end 18 then bears against the lower edge of the sleeve 9, thus holding the plate 8 and the pin 13 up to engage the shoulders 6 and 11. The pin 13 is rigidly secured to the sleeve 9 and moves therewith. The spring 16 lifts the pin and the plate 8 when said plate 8 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that our door securer may be readily applied to a window to prevent the same from rattling, and at the same time, lock the windows against opening from the outside. The latch is simple in construction, cannot readily get out of order, may be manufactured at slight cost, and will be found reliable and efficient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what we'claim is:
A door securer comprising a securing plate provided with bearing sleeves, one of said sleeves having a shoulder thereon, a movable latch late provided with a bearing sleeve, provi ed with shoulders and a notch, a pin engaging said sleeve, a coiled spring surrounding the pintle, and a locking spring having an u turned end to engage said notch, and a ger piece.
In testimony whereof, we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH S. DENNY. JAMES J. FINNEY.
