FANNIE E. SLAPPEY, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FANNIn E. SLArrnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in sash fasteners, and has for its object to so construct the same that the upper and lower sashes of a window may be locked together in partially opened positions, or the same may be locked in their closed positions.
A further object of the invention is to so construct a fastener of this character that the upper and lower sashes may be partially opened and locked together so as to thoroughly ventilate a room, but at the same time prevent a person from the outside from opening the sashes sufficiently to enter the room.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window frame, showing the lock in place and the upper and lower sashes in their closed positions. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the upper and lower sashes, showing them partially opened. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the upper sash and 2 the lower sash, the former having a plurality of recesses 3 formed in its side rail 4, said recesses being arranged in vertical alinement and containing metallic sleeves 5, the purpose of which will appear later.
The sash fastener 6 consists of a base plate 7, which is adapted to be secured to the top rail 8 of the lower sash 2, said base plate having its ends terminating in vertical ears 9, which are provided with registered perforations 10 which are in registry with the Specification of Letters Patent.

open ends of the tube 11, which is soldered or otherwise secured to the base plate 7.
slidably mounted in the tube 11 is a bolt 12, the inner end of which is provided with a tapered nose 13 having the annular shoulder 14- formed upon its inner end and against which the inner terminal of the coil spring 15 bears, said spring surrounding the bolt 12 and having its outer terminal bearing against the outermost ear 0. The spring 15 serves to force the nose 13 outwardly through the perforation formed in the iriner ear 9 so that the same will engage the recesses 3 formed in the side rail 4 to either lock the upper sash in a partially open state, or closed, as shown in Fig. 1. of the drawing. The outer end of the bolt 19 projects through the perforation in the ear 9 and has engaged thereon an operating knob 16, which has formed upon its inner face a pin 17, the same being adapted to engage in the aperture 18 formed in the outer ear 9 when the nose 13 is engaging one of the sleeves 5 in the rail of the upper sash, said pin being adapted to have its end bear against the ear 9 when the bolt is operated to withdraw the nose 13 from engagement with the side rail of the upper sash. To accomplish this it is merely necessary to move the bolt outwardly and partially turn the knob 16.
Secured to the guide strip 19 of the window frame is a plurality of spaced bracket plates 20 which are provided with notches 21 which are adapted to register with the recesses 3 so that the head 13 will engage said notches at the same time the recesses are engaged, whereby the lower sash can be locked partially open, as shown in Fig. 3.
What is claimed is Tn combination with the upper sash of a window having one of its side rails provided with a plurality of vertically alined recesses, a fastener comprising a base plate adapted to be secured to the upper rail of the lower sash, said base plate having spaced ears, said ears having perforations formed therein, a tube secured to the base plate and having its ends in registry with said perforations, a bolt slidably mounted in the tube and having its inner end provided with a tapered nose, a coil spring surrounding the bolt to hold the nose extended from the tube, a knob formed upon the outer end of the bolt, an aperture formed in one of the ears, a pin carried by the knob, brackets carried by the windon frame, notches formed in the brackets and adapted to register with the recesses, said notches and recesses being engaged by the nose When ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
