To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, GUSTAV RADTKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of I1li nois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in a Combined Wrench and Pipe-Cutter and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combined wrench and pipe cutter and my object is to provide means for readily and quickly adjusting the movable jaw towards or from the fixed jaw.
A further object is to provide means for directing the cutting mechanism into engagement with a pipe under pressure and a still further object is to so construct the parts of the wrench that they may be quickly assembled.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation partly insection of my combined wrench and pipe cutter. Fig. 2 is a sectional view tl'iereof, as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 3-3, Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4 is a sectional view as seen on line 41, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indieates the shank of my improved wrench, to one end of which is fixed a jaw 2, the shank 1 being provided with threads 3 on a portion of its length, which are adapted to enter a socket 4 and engage threads 5 therein.
The upper end of the socket a is provided with a pair of collars 6 and 7, said collars being spaced apart to form a channel 8 adjacent the upper end of the socket, in which is adapted to fit a substantially semi-circular tongue 9 on the lower edge of a movable jaw 10, the socket 1 being employed to adjust the movable jaw towards or from the fixed jaw by rotating the socket on the shank 1.
In order to hold the movable jaw 10 in alinement with the fixed jaw 2, the shank 1 is flattened on diametrically opposite sides, as shown at 11, the opening 12 through the movable jaw being constructed in such manher as to snugly fit around the shank 1. To

in order to positively rotate the same, the peripheral surface thereof is roughened, or milled, as shown at 13.
The gripping faces of the jaws 2 and 10 at one side of the shank 1, are adapted to be used as a wrenchand may be provided with teeth 14 and 15 respectively, when the wrench is employed for turning pipes, or other obj ects having round surfaces, while the gripping face of the jaw 2 at the opposite sideof the shank 1 is concaved and the opposite face of the jaw 10 correspondingly convex to extend a cutting disk 16, carried by the jaw 10 between a pair of similar disks 17 and 18 carried by the jaw 2, said disks 17 and 18 being spaced an equal distance from the outer end of the jaw and shank 1, respectively, the disk 16 being so located on the jaw 10 as to extend midway between the disks on the jaw 2, and it will be readily seen that when a pipe is clamped between the disks 17 and 18 and the disk '16 and the wrench rotated around the pipe, said pipe will be severed at this point.
The disks are forced firmly into engagement with the pipe by turning the socket onto the shank 1 and in order to obtaii a sufiicient pressure to cause the disks to ut into the pipe, I secure to the outer end of "he socket 1, a handle 19, having at its outer 2nd a cross bar 20, whereby rotating motion they be readily imparted to the handle, the inner end of the handle being fixed to the sop-ks? 1 in any preferred manner, as by introducing bolts or rivets 21 through the socket and the inserted portion of the handle.
In assembling the parts of the wrench, the tongue 9 is first entered in the channel 8 and the shank 1 then introduced through the opening 12 in the movable jaw 0, until the threaded portion of the shank engages the threads in the socket, when the socket may be rotated either by grasping the cross bar 20 or milled portion of the socket and rotating the same and in cutting a pipe, it will be understood that after the wrench. has been turned around the pipe one or more times, the handle and socket are rotated and the disks again forced into engagement with the pipe, this operation being repeated until the pipe is completely severed.

A wrench of the class described, comprising a shank having flattened portions, threads on a portion of said shank and a jaw fixed to one end of the shank; of'a movable j a'w having an'opening therein, conforming to the contour of the shank, whereby the movable jaw is held in alinement with the I fixed jaw, a socket having threads therein 1 adapted to engage the threads on the shank, collars ad acent one end of the socket, spaced apart to form a channel, a semi-circular tongue on the movable aw adapted to enter said channel, the free ends of the tongue being parallel and extending a slight distance beyond the center of the socket, a handle fixed to one end of the socket and a cross bar on said handle, whereby the socket may be readily rotated and the movable jaw adjusted with respect to the fixed jaw.
