Specification of Letters Patent.

application mea umh 1o, isos. seria-Nt. 420,257.
teners for aper bags, the main object of the -invention eing to provide a fastening device of a simple and effective construction mounted upon the bag,`so that by turning ortions forming atter will be sevcuiel held closed. l
A rther object of the invention is to provide a bendable fastening member of wire or side walls ofV e'bag and adapted'to' be bent upon folding the walls of the mouth to hold the mouth closed, which member is .composed of portions lying on opposite sides of the center of the bag and reinforced at the strength to enable tightly filled bags to be without liability of the mouth being forced open by the pressure of the contents.
construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accom' panying drawing, in which Flgure 1 is a perspective view of an o en bag or sack embodylng my invention.
ig. 2 1s a side view of the same, showing the f mouth portion of the bag folded and closed.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section through a portion of the bag, showing the mode of mounting the fastener therein.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a bag or sack made of other suitable material, and which may be of the folding or collapsible type herein shown or of any other suitable construction.
Preferably, the bag is made in the ordinary manner from a blank or sheet cut, folded and formed into shape, the longitudinal edges of the pa er or material being lunited b a seam forme upon one of the side walls o the bag by overlapping ortions 2 and 3 pasted or otherwise secured) together, such overlap ing portions being of sufiici'ent width to tweenzthe overla Y 2 and 3 and em and fex'tendingin a genera direction toward I attached, their y outwardly and lower ends thereof by connection with each other, thus forming a fastener of maximum paper or i inc ose and confine the fastening device betweenl them.
The fastening device referably consists of,
g a single piece of benda4 le wire or a strip of analogous bendable material disposed bepingseamportions or iiapsodylng a air of members 4 the" mouth'of the bag on op osite sides of the center lineof the side of the ag on which it is disposed. In the construction shown, the fastener is in entirety in the form of a substantially V-shaped piece of wire whose arms or portions 4 and 5 are connected and reinforced at their lower or converging ends by a Yreturn or reinforcing ortion 6, arranged im- -mediately at or little elow the center of the the like arrangxed or inclosedupon one of the iy b ag. From such portion 6 the arms or members 4 and '5 project upwardly in divergent relation and terminate just below the upper edge ofthe side of the bag to which they are u per or free ends being bent cibwnwardly in the form of ard hooks 7, which prevent such ends from eing forced through the material of the bag .and injurin the hands of the operator in closing the ag or of persons subsequently opening or handling the bag. The invention consists of the features of In the operation of closing the mouth of the baO, after the bag has been filled to a greater lor ess extent, the upper or free edges of the sides of the bag are-.brought to ether and then downturned or folded upon t emselves, as illustrated at 8 in Fig. 2, y which, 1f the 'i bag is nearly filled, the up er ends of the fastener members 4 and 5 w` l be bent downward, in which position they will remain and hold the walls of the bag folded so as to securely close the mouth thereof. The lengths of the ortions 4 and 5 permit the walls t'o be downward to a eater or less extent for the ur ose of closlng a artly or completely filled bag, thus permitting the contents to be snugly confined.
It will be obvious that by the described arrangement ofthe parts 4 and 5 of the fastener the mouth of the bag will be held closed by bent fastening portions located on opposite sides of its longltudinal center, thus providing for a firm and secure retention of the mouth ofthe bag in folded or closed condition, and that also by the downwardly converging arrangement of said fastening memturne bers and their reinforcing connection at, theirt lower ends the mouth of the bag, even when the latter is tightly filled, may be held firmly closed against the pressure of the contents.
While the construction and arrangement of the fastening member herein shown and described is referred, it will, of course, be understood t at the construction and arrangement may be modified within the range of equivalents and sco e of the invention as dened in the a pende claims.
Havin thus ully described the invention, what is c aimed as new is 1. A aper bag having 'a side seam formed of over apping portions, and a V-shaped fastening member formed of wire inclosed between said portions, said fastening member extending in the direction of length of the bag and having its arms diverging in the direction toward the mouth of the bag, the
upper ends of said `arms being bent to form guards to prevent said ends from puncturing the materlal of the bag.
2. A aper bag having a side seam formed of over apping portions, and a fastenin member formed of wire inclosed between said ortions, said fasteningv member extending 1n the direction of lengthvof the bag and having portions diverging in the direction toward the mouth of the ba and having their upper ends bent upward y and downwardly ItO form guards to prevent said ends from puncturing the material of the bag.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
