TRUNK-STRAP.
To all whom it' may concern: Be it known that'l, JOHN N'. GORMAN, a citizen of the Uniteda States of America, and resident of Richmond, county of Henrico7 State of Virginia; have invented certain new` and useful Improvements in Trunk-StrapS, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whichh Y Figure l is a perspective view ofthe buckle showing it closed Fig. 2 a pers ectiye' view showing the buckle opened and t ie two members separated, in position to be connected and swung over to closed locking position; Fig. 3 a vertical longitudinel sectional view showing' the buckle closed; and Fig. 4 a pen Spe'ctive view of the locking or keeper memberl the buckle.
This invention Ahas reference to that class of trunk and other straps in which a suitable lock is carried by a' lever-like member to which the adjustable end of the strap is connected and which is pivotally connected to a main member or keeper, and the object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of this type of devices, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings annexed by reference characters, A designates the keeper member which at its forward end is provided with a. transverse keeper bar e which is elevated'above the upper surface of the main plate of the member. Near the forward end this plate A is provided with a transverse slot hand near its rear end is provided with a pair of adjacent transverse slots c, c, and at its extremo rear-end. this plate is provided with an u )turned hook (l which opens for Wardly. (me end of the strap is fastened to this member by passing it down through slot l) and along the under Side of the member and threading it through the slots c, c, the end of the strap terminating at a point beyond the rearmost slot c.
` The lever member B is provided with a suitable key lock c which is suitably fastened. to its under side between the side flanges of the member, with its locking bolt f pointing forward and in Vsuch position that when the lever member is forced down upon the main member' the said locking bolt willsnap under the keeper bar a and thus hold the parts in locked relation until said bolt is withdrawn f'means of a suitable key. At the rear end tliis lever. member is provided with a transverse pivot bar g which fits and Works in the Specification of Letters Patent.

To adjust the strap toa trunk after the strap has been passed around the trunk in the usual manner, the lever member being detached from the keeper member, it is simply necessary to pull the free end of the strap through the slots it, i, to a point that will enable the o erator tojust hook the pintle g over the iook d, the lever member lying lock-side up as shown in Fig. 2. 'Then by swinging the lock-carryiiw in the manner of a lever and forcing it down upon the main member until its locking bolt engages th'e keeper of the main member7 the strap will be drawn taut around the trunk and locked.
It will be observed that by my manner of attaching the buckle to the straps the metal parts of thebuekle will be supported up oil the trunk by means of the peculiar manner of threading the vkeeper member on the end of the strap. lt will be observed also that by making the lever. member separable from the other member so that it may be lifted up o'fl' the trunk and freely handled while the free end of the strap is being adjusted, the operator may adjust the strap to the proper point in the buckle with but a single adjustment. lt will be observed also that by reason of the rigid connection between that. part of the main member which forms the keeper and that part which forms the fulcrum of the lever member the distance between the aXis of the pivot and lulcruin and the keeper bar will always remain the same so that the locking bolt will always strike the keeper plate and engage the same, even after long 'continued use of the device, whereas if the fulcrum of the lever member be connected to the keeper-carrying part of the memberby a flexible connection, con-l tinued used of the device would stretch the.
