WILLIAM WILLIAMS, OF DUGGER, INDIANA.
CLOSURE FASTENER.
T o all zo /iom t may con cef/vt.'r
Be it known that l, Nummer lUILLiAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dugger, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Closure Fasteners.I of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices applicable to swinging doors for the purpose of holding the same in open or partly open position, and its object is to provide a device which is very simple and efficient, and which can be readily operated to hold the doorinany desired position, and to release the door, so that it may be closed.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device showing its application; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the door swung partly open; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the parts in another position, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. V
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fragment of a swinging door to which the invention is applied. The top o' of the door frame carries a bracket member having an outstanding horizontal flange 7 which is provided with a longitudinal slot 8, one edge of which latter is notched as l Shown at 9. The flange 7 forms the keeper member of a locking pin 10 carried by the forward end of a yoke 11 which straddles the flange. The pin 10 seats slidably in the slot 8 and is adapted to be shifted laterally to enter one of the notches 9, the yoke being suiiciently loose to permit this movement of the pin. Y y
The face of the door 5 carries, near the top, a bracket 12 having an upturned pin 13 which pivotally supports a socketed Vmember 14. To the member 14 is connected one end of a rod 15 which has its other end connected to the rear end of the yoke 11,

'that it may slide freely along the same when the door 5 is swung open or closed. The rod 15 is screwed into the member 14 so that its effective length may be varied for the purpose of properly adjusting the parts. The rod 15 is also shown as being` screwed into the rear end of the yoke and fitted with a nut 16 back of the latter. It 1s to be understood however, that the parts may be held in assembled relation in any other suitable manner. n
On top of the flange 7 seats a shifter bar 17 for the pin 10, to take the same into` and out of the notches 9. This bar has longitudinal slot 18 parallel to the slot 8 and at its ends are oblique slots 19 into which extend "stationary pins 2O carried by the flange 7.
Tt Awill therefore be seen that a movement ofthe bar 17 in the direction of its length 1s accompanied by a transverse movement, and as the pin 10 also extends through the slot 18, the lateral movement of the bar operates to carry said pin int-o `and out of the notches 9. i
Any suitable means may be provided for operating the shifter bar 17. The drawing shows one end of the bar linked to a bell crankl lever 21 carried by the side 22 of the door frame, and connected by a link 23 to an operating lever 24, which latter is also carried by said side of the door frame.
The shifter bar 17 is normally so positioned on the flange 7 that it covers the notches 9 as shown in Fig. 2, and the door 5 may now. be swung as the pin 10 is held freeof the notches so that it may slide in the slots and 18. To lock the door in the partly Vopen position shown in Fig. 2, the hand lever 24 is operated to slide the shifter bar 17 to the right from the position shown, so that it assumes the Vposition shown in Fig. 3. This movement of the bar, through the pin 20 and the oblique slots 19, was accompanied by a forward orV lateral Inovement of the bar to the position shown in Fig. 3,resulting in the pin 10 being forced over into one of the notches 9. The door is now securely locked in partly open position, and before it can be closed, the bar 17 must be moved back to the' position shown in Fig. 2, by'which the pin 10 is carried rearwardly out of the notch in which it had been previously seated. In this manner the door can be swung open to any desired degree, and it will be securely held in such position, and
at the same time, its release to permit closing is readily effected, the hand lever 24 being located so as to be within easy reach.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, but it will be understood that many changes and modications may be made without a departure from the spirit and scope thereof as claimed hereinafter. The invention is also readily aprplicable to other swinging closures besides doors.
l claim:
