COMBINED LOCK AND LATCH.

Be it known that LWVILLIAM O. LAW- nnNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in Spokane County, and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an improved combined lock and latch especially applicable for use in connection with doors for garages and other buildings, and while the invention is hereinafter referred to as applied to a hinged door, it will be understood that with slight alterations the device of my invention may be utilized in connection with sliding doors or other similar objects.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a simple and compact arrangement of a locking device at the exterior side of the door in combination with a normally closed latch device at the interior side of the door, and means whereby the locked door may be unlatched from the interior, but can only be unlatched from the exterior after the exterior lock device has been released.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings 1 have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention in connection with a hinged door, wherein the parts are combined and arranged in accordance with the best mode I have thus far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a locked door and its upper frame bar or transverse casing, showing also the relation thereto of the combined lock and latch of my invention.

In order that the general assembly and relation of parts may readily be understood I have designated part of a hinged door as D, and the door casing or adjacent wall as C and the top, transverse bar of the door cas Serial No. 700,989.
ing as T. At the interior side of the door is located a latch 1 disposed in approximately horizontal position and provided with a head 2. The latch is pivoted at 3 in the casing 4 which is secured near the top of the door and is carried thereby. The hook of the latch is designed to co-act with a keeper slot 5 in the under face of the transverse bar T of the door frame, and normally the hook is in engagement with the keeper to hold the door against opening movement. The latch is retained in closed position by means of a flat spring 6 located in the casing and having its upper end in engagement with a notch or shouldered end '2' of the latch. The tension of the spring may be adjusted by means of the adjusting bolt 8 threaded in the nut 9 affixed to the casing,
and a pin 10 extending transversely through the casing performs the function of a fulcrum for the spring When pressure is applied at its end below the fulcrum for adjusting the tension of the spring with relation to the latch. By pressing in on the lower end of the spring the upper end will be caused to bear with greater force on the pivoted latch to cause its engagement with the keeper therefor. The pivoted movement of the latch is limited by its engagement with the top wall of the casing and also by the spring.
At the interior side of the door the latch may be released from its keeper by a pull on the flexibly connected bars 11 and 12,
the former being connected to the latch by pivot in one of the selected holes 13 of the latch, and the bars are pivoted together at 14: in order that they may swing toward the right in Figure 1 to angular position for releasing the latch. This swinging movement pulls the latch down to its dotted position in Figure 1 for releasing the hook from its keeper. When the pull on the bars 1 is released, the spring 6 returns the latch and these bars to normal position.
The latch may also be released from the exterior of the building or from the outer side of the door D, and for this purpose I use a bell crank lever 15 pivoted to the The link is 11(1 is pivotally suspended between the bell crank lever and a shank 18 provided with an end knob 19 and passed tansversely through the door which is slotted at 20 for this purpose. The shank and knob are rigid with the hasp 21, a joint 22 being indicated in Figure 2 between the hasp and shank, a d the hasp is pivoted at 23 to the exterior of the door below the slot.
It will thus be seen that by grasping the knob and pulling thereon the hasp is swung on its pivot or hinge 23 and the pivotally suspended link 17 bet-ween the shank and bell crank lever draws on the latter to swing it on its pivot 16. This movement of the bell crank lever is transmitted to the flexible pull bar comprising members 11 and 12 of the latch, and the latch is thereby released from the exterior to permit opening of the door in usual manner.
The hesp is normally locked against this opening movement by the utilization of a padloet 2&- or other lockin device in co-n nection with a staple which has an attaching plate 26 secured at the outer side of the door and which projects through a suitable opening in the hasp provided therefor.
Thus When the padlock is locked in the staple over the hasp the latter cannot be turned on its hinge for releasing the latch 1 until the padlock has been unlocked and withdrawn from the staple 25.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of a casing, a normally closed spring pressed latch pivoted in the casing and operating mechanism at the inner side of a door comprising a pair 01" pivoted pull bars pivotally connected to the latch, a bell crank lever pivoted at one end of one of said bars, a link pivoted to said lever, an exterior pivoted hasp having a knob thereon and a sha k on said hasp pivoted to said link, and means tor locking said hasp.
2. The combination with a normally closed latch and its flexible operating mech anism at one side of a door, of a bell crank lever connected with said mechanism, a link connected to one arm of said lever, a hasp pivoted at the outer side of the door, an angularly disposed shank on the hasp .pivoted to said link, and means 'for locking the hasp.
