Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led August 14, 1906. Serial No. 330,582.
same, the object being to provide a basel which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which can be easily and quickly secured in the ground in a rigid position,
without any danger of it being affected by the freezing or thawing of the ground.
Another object of my invention is to provide the base with upwardly extendingarms forming means for forcing the auger into the ground and for securing the wooden posts thereto. Y
Another object of my invention is to provide a base so constructed that after it has been anchored into the ground it will support the post in a rigid position so as to eX- tend the tension of the wires or the rubbing of cattle without any danger of it being pulled out.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a fence showing the ground being broken away so as to show one of anchormg bases. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the anchor base. Eig. 3 is a top plan view of the anchor base. Fig. l is a detallvertical sectional view of the anchor base.
In constructing myimproved anchoring base Iy employ a tube A having a spiral slot cut in its lower end forming a spiral auger A', which is adapted to be screwed into the ground having an outwardly projecting flange A2, at the upper end of the auger, adapted to rest on the ground and securely hold the base in a vertical position. The upper end of the tube A is provided with oppositely disposed slots forming arms A3, by means of which the auger can be readily forced into the ground by inserting a bar between .the arms and turning the same. Wooden posts B are adapted'to be secured between the arms A, by bolts C passing through openings lformed in the arms on which the fence wires D are adapted to be secured by staples inthe ordinary manner, and it will be readily seen that the arms can be expanded or contracted to receive different size posts as desired, and that the bottom of the post will be held off the ground so as to prevent the same from rotting.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an anchor base which can be readily secured in the ground, and one which is so constructed that the ordinary form of post can be secured therein.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is 1. A post anchor base comprising a slotted tubular top ortion, a spiral auger lower portion, and t e intermediate flanged portion arranged between the slotted tubular and auger portions.
2. A post anchor base comprising the spiral shaped auger, the annular ange arranged at the upper end of said spiral auger, and the tubular portion projecting upwardly from the annular flange, said tubular portion being slotted longitudinally as and for the purpose described.
