F ENCEPOST;
APPLICATION FILED AUG.23, 1919.

A'TfEl lT @FFICE.
ISAAC A. REYNOLDS, OF PITTSBORO, INDIANA.
FENCEFOST.
Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed. August 2 3, 1919. Serial No. 319,421.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Isaac A. RnrnoLns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsboro, county of Hendricks, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Fencepost; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inwhich like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a fence post and particularly to that type of post adaptable for corners and gates, whereby the post will be firmly anchored to withstand the strain exerted by the tension of the fence.
The main object of this invention to provide an anchorage for the post which will be entirely hidden and concealed beneath the ground, but at the same time anchor the post from the top. This is accomplished by providing a web base haying anchoring rods extending from the ends thereof into the post beneath the surface of theyground, said anchoring rods being secured at their inner ends to the top of the post inside thereof.
Byv means of this construction, not only a post of neat appearance is provided, but a "very staple and strongly braced. post, which will be firmly anchored in the ground by means invisible above the ground surface.
The full nature of this invention will be fully understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
cross section through the post and anchor.
Fig. 3 is a section taken .on the line 33 of;
Fig. 2.
In'the' drawings there is shown a hollow cylindrical -metal fence post 10, which is mounted on a Web anchoring base 11 having with a plurality of radially extending arms provided with slits or holes in their extreme ends in which are engaged anchoring rods 12 by means of the nuts 18 screwed on the end thereof. The radial arms are provided with fins 14; extending longitudinally thereof and a central projection 15 over which the bottom of the hollow post is adapted to fit for holding it in place. The post 10 is provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots 16, each slot corresponding to an arm 11 and placed in said post at a point wherein they will be below the surface of the ground when the post is set. The rods 12 are adapted to extend through said slots into said posts so as to have their heads 17 engaged by the anchoring disk 18 which is provided with radial slots corresponding to the longitudinal slots 16. The disk 18 is secured to a cap 19 mounted on top of the post, by the central rod 20, which is adaptedto cause the disk 18 to pull the anchoring rods taut when the nut 21 is tightly screwed on the rod 20.
By means of this construction, when the anchoring base is -firmly set in the ground, it will anchor the post through the medium of the anchoring rods, firmly upon the top thereof, and at the same time the anchoring and bracing of the post will be entirely invisible above the surface of the round.
or boiler tubingmounted on a cast iron baseand assembled with a plurality of tie rods.
However, in place of tie rods, cables could be used as well, and, therefore, it is contemplated that thisinventionand the claims therefor be restricted to the use of rods and where the term rod is used, the term cable may be substituted therefor without departing from the invention set forth.
The invention claimed is:
1. A fence post comprising in combination a tubular upright member, an anchor ing base upon which said member is mount ed, said base having a plurality of openings upon its outer edge, said upright member being provided with a similar number of longitudinal slots between the ends thereof, a slot and an opening lying in substantially the same vertical plane, a similar number of tie rods engageable in said openings and extending upwardly and inwardly throu h the associated slots, a cap mounted upon t e upper end of said tubular member to close the same, a rod suspended. centrally from said cap and extending downwardly within said member, a disk supported by said rod and slidable within said tubular member adjacent said longitudinal slots, said disk having a similar number of slots, each of said slots being positioned adjacent a lonseat said tie rods which extends through said longitudinal slots and into said tubular member, and means associated With said disk supporting rod for drawing said disk upwardly to tauten said tie rods to brace said tubular member and secure the tie rods, disk, supporting rod and the tubular member in adjusted position.
' 2. A fence post comprising in eo1nbination a tubular upright member closed at its upper end, an anchoring base upon which said member is mounted, said base having a plurality of'openings upon its outer edge, said upright member between the ends thereof being provided with a similar number of longitudinal slots, each slot being p0- sitioned in'a vertical plane including one of said openings, a similar numberof tie rods having one end engageable in said openings and extending upwardly through the corresponding slot into said tubular member, a (115k positioned transversely of said tubular member and longitudinally slidable therein,
said disk being provided with a similar tautensaid tie rods and brace said tubular member, said means securing said disk in the tautened position,
In witness whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature.
