rnnon CONSTRUCTION. I
- Application filed'March 5, 1927. Serial 1%. 173,169.
This invention relates to fence constructions, and the primary object is to provide a triangularlyfarranged' set of three fence posts, all of which are constructed in a novel,
5 efiicient and practical manner, whereby they will be rendered .unusually rigid so as to withstand the heavy pull'to whichthey are subjected by virtue of being the anchorage for the fence wires which extend along the edges of the field, frequently-for great distances. Further and more specificobjects will be disclosed in the course of the following. specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which V Fig. 1 is a perspective View, partly in sec tion, of av corner of afield, showing'the installationrtherein of my improved fence posts; I
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the corner post,
each be, independently and firmly anchored The fence in previously dug post holes, wires D, after being suitably stretched, are primarily secured to the post C, but may also be secured to the posts A and B in the same manner that they .are secured to other posts along the edge of the field. While I have shown clamping devices 6, for securing the wires to the post C, it is to'be understood that any suitable wire fastening means may be employed. I may also state that while I have here shown my fence posts as made of angle-iron, it may, under certain circumstances, be desirable to use posts of tubular or other forms. the posts are firmly'and ad'justably-connected by connecting bars 7, having nuts 8,
whereby they will be solidly braced with respect to each other.
with a link 9, and, at an intermediate point, with a lever 10, which pivots at 11.
substantially vertical, T-iron anchor plate 12, the lower end of which has an angularly connected to The top ends of,
. The post C is provided, at its lower end,
The outer ends of the members 9 and 10 carry a projec'ting 'lip 13, iThe inner'end of the v lever 10 is provided with a plate 14. having a lip 15. The plate 14 has'a perforation to receive the lower threaded end of an inclined brace rod 16, having anadjustinginut 1 7,1 the upper end of the rod 16 being connected; to the upper end of the post, as by across pin 18. a The posts A and B are similarly provided with members 9, 12 and'13, but the actuating levers 10 in this instance, instead of being substantially straight like the lever 10,. are bent levers, and the upright portions are ithe posts proper by draw bolts 19.-
Afterthe post holeshave beenv dug the posts are inserted with'the anchor members 12 in their dropped down positions (the bolts 16 and 19 being loose orremoved). The plate 14 is now pressed down as far as possible as with the foot, and the lower end of the rod 16 is inserted in 14, the nut 17 having first been raised as high as possible. The upper end, of therod is now fastened with thepin 18, whereupon the nut '17 is screwed down, thus forcing the plate 12 awav from the post and'a ainst the solid wall of the hole, and also extensions 13 and 15 into the solid earth.
orcing-the lip o At the limit of the adjustment of the plate 14 should if possible rest on the ground, thus giving further rigidity to the post. The
posts A and B are quite similarly rendered very rigid in the ground by drawing up the bolts 19. The tie bars 7 may be applied and adjusted Whenever it is found mostconvenient' or desirable to do so.=
Itwill be noted thatthe posts are now not only rigidly anchored in the ground and with respect t-o each other, but that each post is. anchored directly in contact with-the opposite, hard wallsrof the post hole, and tliat'during the fastening process,,the lip extensions 13 have not only become imbedded in the solid ground, but have also, by
the lifting effect of the lever action, caused the post proper tomore firmly seat itself in the bottom of the hole. I
After the posts have thus become properly arranged and adjusted the holes can be filled with dirt, rock or concrete, to keep out water, ice, rodents, etc., as may be found necessary.
It is understood that suitable modifications may be made in the general design-and structural details of the invention as herein shown, provided, however, that said modifications come within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having now therefore fully shown and described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a fence post,an anchor plate arranged substantially parallel with thelower end of the post and connected therewith by links, and lever acting means for forcibly spreading the anchor plate away from the post.
2. in combination with a fence post, an anchor plate arranged substantially parallel with the lower end of the post and connected therewith by links, and lever acting means for forcibly spreading the anchor plate away from the post, said anchor plate having a projection for engagement in the solid wall of a post hole.
3. The combination with a fence post, of an anchor member connected with the lower portion thereof and adapted 'to be spread therefrom, a lever acting member for so actuating the anchor member, and means connecting thelever with the post for forcibly actuating the lever.
4. The combination with afence post, of an anchor member connected with the lower portion thereof and adapted to be spread therefrom, a lever acting member for so actuating the anchor member, and means connecting the lever. with thepost for forcibly actuating the lever, said means comprising a threaded bar adjustably connecting the lever with the post.
5. The combination with a fence post, of an anchor member connected with the lower portion thereof and adapted to be'spread therefrom, a lever acting member for soactuating the anchor member, and means connecting the lever with the post for forcibly actuating the lever, said lever acting mem her having a' portion for bracing engagement with the ground.
6. The combination with a fence post, of
an anchor member connected with the lower portion thereof and ,7 adapted to be spread therefrom, a lever acting member for so actuating the anchor member, and means connecting the lever with the postvfor forcibly actuating the lever, said lever. acting memher having a portion for bracing engagement'with the ground, and said lever also having means for piercing the surface of the ground to effect a maximum bracing of the post.
