Letters Patent No. 89,140, dated A11/ril 20, 1869. I
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. GARDNER, of Almond, in the county of Allegany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,`clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make .and use the same, reference being had to the accomhaving my improvement applied to it, and

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding Parts I A represents the tub, B a rotary grooved rubbingcylinder, and C a curved grooved reciprocating board,
working in conjunction with one side o f the cylinder,
being actuated by a crank and connecting-rod, and forced against the cylinder or the clothes by a spring.
In the operation of this machine it is desirable to arrest the motion o'f the cylinder at times, to subject .certain parts of the clothes to a continued rubbing action by the board C.
To this end, I provide on the axle of the cylinder a toothed wheel, as shown in dotted lines at D, and com- .bine therewith a curved toothed brake, E, so arranged that it may be actuated either by the hand or foot, and provided with a spring, F, to hold it out of contact With the toothed wheel when not required Ito actthereon. The roller being operated by a belt, G, and grooved pulley, permits such stoppages, when required, without interfering with the action of the other parts.`
For ar'tuating the lever by the foot, a treadle is suspended from the end thereof by a oord or rod.
Having 'thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe combination7 with the cylinder B, of the toothed I brake-wheel and brake, when arranged to be operated by the hand or foot, and provided with the spring E, all substantially as speciied.
