Description
No. 93,842. PATENTED AUG. 17, 1869. "C. STEBBINS.
TREADLE} Wifnessesy L wnitui fitatw {gaunt Qlflllinn.
Letters Patent No. 93,842, dated August 17, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN TREADLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, CARLOS STEBBINS, of Pike, in the county of Wyoming, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Treadles for Driving Machinery by Foot-Power; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, oleanandexact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the treadle and standard, with the foot of the operator in position.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consistsiu the device of a hanging and swinging treadle, hung on centres or points of suspension, which centres or points are at a height above the upper surface of the foot-plate, whereby I am able to obtain a motion of the foot for driving a treadle and machinery connected therewith, without any detrimental motion of the body of the operator.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
0 is the standard, on which the treadle hangs.
A' D is a bent bar, hanging on centres at B B, and. carrying the foot-plate.
upon the foot-plate.
a is the foot-plate, formed on A, or rigidly attached ..plate a with the ankle-joint in line with the centres or points of suspension B B of the treadle, as shown by the dotted line 0.
In operatingthe treadle, the toe and heel of the operator are alternately depressed and elevated, and at the same time the whole footwit-h the foot-plate is swung backward and forward, communicating a vibratory movement to the connecting-rod, and a rotary motion to the crank, or equivalent.
The advantages of this treadlc-rnotion are, steadiness of hand and eye in the operator, great rapidity of operation, with small tendency to slipping of the foot XVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Alxanging and swinging treadle, arranged and operating substantially in the manner herein specified and set forth.
\Vitnesses: CARLOS STEBBINS.
