Description
animi F. Ifl.v FURNISS, OF WATERLOO, NEW YORK.
Leum Patent No. 89,138, daad Amr 2o, 1869.
IMPROVED VISIE.
*-m-Q; Th VSchedule referred 1n these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. H. FURNISS, of Waterloo, in
'I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in vises, the object of which is to provide for more permanently holding those vises which are arranged to be adjusted to any angle relatively to the bench.
The drawing represents an elevation of my improved vise, partly in section, and appliedfto a bench.
Those vises arranged to be adjusted on the bench, have heretofore been secured in the desired position by clamping one smooth Y surface 'to another, by the screw, which fails toV hold the vise as securely as desired, in some cases.
My invention consists in providing both the base', A, which is secured to the bench, and the lower face ofthe vise bearing thereon, with grooves, forming teeth radiating from the centre, on which the vise is to be rotated, capable of meshing together,to prevent the vise B from being moved by any strains upon the work b eing done with the vise. The said teeth may be of anypreferred form, either angular, rounded, or rectangular, as may be preferred. Y
When so arranged, the screw-nut, commonly applied to the holding-down bolt, or spindle C, may be disi pensed with, and a spiral or other spring substituted for it, being so arranged as to have a suiicient pressure to hold the vise properly; and a sliding collar, E,- may be placed on the bolt, to adjust the tension of the springs.
The upper end of the spring bears against the bed plate A, and the lower end of the bolt is supported in alug projecting from a bracket, F, projecting downward from the said base-plate. It may, however, if preferred, be supported by any other means.
To change the vise from one position to another, it must be raised suiiioiently to disengage the teeth.
In the case of large and heavy vises, which would be diicult to lift, a lever, G, may be arranged4 under the boltto raise it, and connected to a foot-lever, H, whereby the raising may be accomplished more readily.
Any suitable arrangement of levers may be adopted.
Having thus described my invention, p'
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the spindle O, spring D, and bracket F, with the vise B, and bed-plate A, provided with teeth, arranged to operate in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the foregoing, the lever G,
and treadle H, as herein described, for the purpose specified.
F. H. FURNrss.
