Description

itrii iitit RoYALL s. HILDRETH, or soUrHv ADAMs'MASSAGHUSETTs Letters Patent No.108,784dated November 1,1870.
IM PROVEMENT lN VISES.
The Schedule refened to in theseLetters Patent and making p axt of the' same.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, vRoYALL S. .HILDRETm of South Adams, iu the county of Berkshirel and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new` and improved Vise; and I do hereby declare that ythe following is a full, clear,v and exact description thereof,v which will enableA 'othersskilled in the art to make and `use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyng drawing forming-part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical central section of my improved vise. l
Figure 2 is a pla-n or top View ofthe same.
Figure 3 is 'a perspective view of one of the additional jaws.
Figure 4 is a detail transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is toproduce an improved vise, which shall be simple in construction, and eflicieut in operation; and V .'lhe invention consists in the combination of a grooved sleeve, clampingI jaws, a yvertically-moving screw-nut, as hereinafter described. V
A in the drawing represents the stem or standard of the vise. Its base or foot a is made in the form of a. flange, with circular slots b b. Bolts 'or screws c c, fitted through the said slots serve to secure the whole standard and its appendages to the side or top ofa table, or other support. The slots serve to permit a horizontal adjustment of the standard.
To eals d d, that project from the standard, are, by means of pins e c, pivoted the levers B B, which, at their upper ends, .carry the jaws h h of the vise. A spring, f, serves to holdv the jaws apart.
Around the standard is tted a nut, O, working on a proper screwrthread, as shown.
The nut carries ay hand-wheel, D, and is, by pins g g, or their equivalents, swiveled to a cylindrical sleeve, E, which partly embraces the levers B.
ent-v The sleeve will, byturning, and thereby verticallyj 'adjusting the nut, also be vertically l adjusted to thereby setthe levers' more or less'far apart, the outer edges of vthe leversV being curved and inclined, as shown..
, F Fare additional jaws, which are placed upon the :jaws h, by being .suspendedfromthe same, as shown.
yFor this,v purpose each jaw F -hasan outward projecting flange or head, li, which rests upon the jaw h; Furthermore, there is on the outer Vface of each -jawF a 1ib,j,.which tits intoa corresponding groove of the jaw h.' i The rib j' is sufficiently large to allow the jaw'F to rock on it, and to be thereby adjusted to different positions. .i
.lheijaws F can thus `be used to'clamp wedgeshaped articles with. the thickends either up o1:
down., v
The sleeve E has guide-grooves for the backs of the levers jB, to prevent their Alateral displacement.
, When thesleeve is so turned as to bring its groovesv out of line with the levers, the levers can play Sudi- -cient o n -theirpivotsto,set the jaws at an augle,.
tally; Having thus described my inventicm,- l I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat'- wherebythey are enabled to hold wedges horizon-
