HUP-
IMPROVEMENT IN FLOOR-CLAMP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the 'same I, GEORGE Woon, of the city of Philadelphia, and
`I State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My Invention mainly consistsof a peculiar combination and arrangement of the retaining and forcing dcvices of the apparatus, by means of bevel-gearing connectin g the said parts, anda partially rotating griping- I cam, and certain auxiliary parts in connect-ion with the former; in sucha manner that when the apparatusis placed on a Joist or other timber for forcing the iioorin gboards orother pieces together, the rotation of said gear- L clamping is commenced, and when the latter is linished theforcing device has to be released before the `clamp can be loosened from the joist. f i
'To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will now givea detailed description of this specification- I 'y Figure 1` is a plan or topgvieiv of the improved clamp. Figure 2 is a side elevation ofthe same. Figure 3 is a plan of the bed-plate A. Figure 4 isa side elevation of the same. 1 Figure 5 is an isometrical view of the forcing-clamp Y iu a reversed position.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
Als a bed-plate, to which` the several parts of the device are attached. i I
The horizontal plate a rests upon the juist, and thc griplng Vribbed jaw b is forced against one side, of' the saine, as hereinafter described.
The saidbed-plate is shown in det-ail in figs. 3 and 4. y B is the forcing-clamp, and i I G1 the driving-screw, which works in the rear end of thestraight part d, which hasa nut cut in its rear I end, to receive the screw O, the other part being hol- )owed out to fo\r1n -ashield for the same.
D is a partially-revolving griping-cam, on the ver- I tical short shaft E, which has an arm, f, on its upperend, which is provided witlf'a pulling-catch, I".
`rOn thedriving-screw C there is la.bevelpinion, G,
which gears into the wheel H, the cam D being in the position represented in dotted lines in fig. 1,I so as to admit of the apparatus being placed on the joist I,
with the forcing-clamp B against the board g. lhe wheel H is turned in the direction ofthe arrow, so as to rotate the driving-screw C, bringing the clamp B suiliciently tight against theboard to cause the partial receding of theIbedlplate A, whereby the cam D is ibrced'partly around, land the joist is clasped tight between it and the jaw b. The screw O being still revolved until the board g is clamped tight against the board y', the part el of the clamp sliding in the groove It on the 'upper side of the bed-plate A, andv in the socket t' on the front end ofthe same. I
lTo facilitate the griping-ribs c of the jaw 11, and the ribs or teeth of the cam I) takingv hold ofthe joist, by having their direction inclined to that of the grain of t 1e wood, and also to prevent the front end ofthe bedplate Arising during the clamping operation, the said teeth are arranged in angular position, as represented in the drawings.
When the apparatus has to be removed for clamping another board, the motion of the driving-screw G oft-he' gearing is reversed, and the shoulder h of the catch E coming against the shoulder 7s of the groove l, into which the end of the catch had been previously forced by the spring J which is attached to the arm f, causes the incline m of the catch to bear against the stationary incline n, on the bed-plate A, whereby the arm f is Apulled around until the cam D isfreed from the joist for the 'removal of the apparatus. I
Thereis a spring, K, attached to the bed-plateA A, against which the pin o, which projects' from the under side of the arm f, bears in its backward position, which spring forces the Aarm back into its first position.
The improved clamp may be advantageously used for the clamping of doors, sash, and for many other things, and it may be used as a lifting-jack by placing it endwise on thefloor or other, support, when the catch is released from the incline n, causing the camto engage with the joist.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letv ters Patent, is
1. 'lhe combination of the catch F, spring J, arm f, `cam D, forcing-clamp B, and bed-plate A, constructed and operating as described, and for the pur- .pose specified.
day of December, 1869.
