UNITED STATES PETER SOHOLL, OF OASHTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPS FOR HOLDING TIMBER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,816, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SOHOLL, of Cashtown, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Timber-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, of my improved timber-holder. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same taken on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new apparatus for holding timber to be sawed, tenoned, hewed, or otherwise shaped or prepared for use in fences or other purposes it consists in the arrangement of a hinged jaw on a fixed post and in the connection therewith of a lever for setting the jaw, all as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents an upright post secured in the ground or affixed to a platform or plate, B, to be stationary. O. is a bolt fitted through the upper part of the post, and provided with a nut, a, so that it may be adjusted lengthwise therein. To the front end of the bolt 0 is, by means of a link, D, connected a lever, E. The link D has pins or teeth, I), at the side facing the post A, the latter being also provided with similar projections d. F F are two rests or benches, on which the timber G to be held is supported. The outer end of the lever E can be held down by means of a pin, 6, projecting from a post, H. When the lever is swung and held down the link is carried and held against the timber G so as to serve as a jaw in crowding it against the post A. The projections b and d prevent the timber from slipping.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the post A and bolt 0 with the link D and lever E, the link serving as a jaw for holding the timber against the post, as specified.
PETER SOHOLL.
