Letters Patent No. 83,958, dated November 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT. IN SAW-HORSE.
To all whom it may banco/m:
Be n known that i, ovens H. HARDY, 0f Bam in the county of Sagadahoc, and State of Maine, have invented an Improvement in Saw-Horses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in wliich h Figure l is aperspective View of my improved saworse.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the saine.
This invention consists iu aclamp, operated by a foot-lever, for firmly holding the wood, while being cut, upon a saw-horse, the 4clamp'being made adjustable, so as to hold the wood at different portions of its length.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the man` ner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A B represent theside-pieces or frames of a saw-horse, which are connected together' in the ordinary manner by rounds or braces a b c d e.
C is a curved clamp or jaw, which is pivoted on the upper round a., and is free to slide longitudinally thereon, between the frames A B. The lower extremity of the clamp C, which is bifurcated at f, ts over the upper round or brace g of a frame or lever, D, which pivots on the brace o, asa centre, and is provided at its lower end with a round, h., upon which the foot is placed when it is desired to operate the clarnp O, to cause it to hold the Wood firmly in place upon the saw-horse while it is being cut; and in order to prevent the wood from slipping, the inside of the clamp C is serrated,.or provided with teeth, and to the side-pieces A B, oph posite thereto, are secured toothed plates t' t'.
By sliding the clamp C along the round, a, it may be made to hold the wood at dilerent portions of its length, in proportion as it may extend on either side beyond the frames A or B, and if the cut is to be made between the frames, the clamp may be moved so as not to interfere with the saw, and yet hold the' wood close to the point where it is being cut.
By means of the arrangement above described, when the foot is placed uponthe lever D, the clamp C is forced in the direction of the red arrow, iig. 2, vand serves to hold the piece of Wood against that side of the saw-horse opposite to the person using Athe saw, so that when a board, slab, or other narrow piece of wood is to be out, the edge instead of the dat surface is presented to the saw, and the operation of cutting is thereby rendered less tedious. Where the piece of wood to be out is of small diameter, the curved clamp G will extend over it, but if a large piece is placed upon the horse, it will be held by the point only of the clamp, which if desired may be curved more than shown iu the drawings, and provided with a sharp point, so as to strike into or penetrate the wood.
I do not claim broadly a clamp or lever applied to a saw-horse for the purpose of holding the wood thereon while being out, as I am aware that such a device has been previously used; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The clamp C, herein described, sliding longitudinally between the frames A B of a saw-horse, in combination with the frame or lever D by which it is operated.
