IMPROVEMENT IN VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,932, 'dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IEVIN ROBERTS, of Meriden, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the fol# lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invent-ion appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved vise, and Fig. 2 a like view of one of the removable pins or bolts.
The object of my invention is to construct a vise so that its jaws may be readily and firmly closed by the foot ofthe workman; and to that end it consists in the novel means employed for that purpose, and hereafter described. y
In the drawing, A represents a fixed or Vrigid post forming a part of the jaw of the vise. B is a horizontal piece, to which the post A is rigidly attached. U is a flat bolt or bar passing freely through the post A. A is a movable post forming the remaining part of the jaw of the vise. 'lhe bar C also passes freely through the post A', and the latter is so mortised that it can oscillate to and from the post A, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. rIhe outer end of the bolt C is provided with a head for the purpose of retaining the post A in its position on the bolt, and the inner end of the bolt is perforated, as shown.
c is a removable pin passing freely through any of the perforations ofthe bolt, so that the extreme distance between the jaws of the vise may be thereby regulated. n The bolt C fits the mortises through which it passes, so that the post A cannot move, except to and from the post A. D is a brace rigidly attached to the piece B and post A. E is also a brace attached to the same parts by removable pins, and, if deemed best, the forked end of this brace mayalso be perforated, so that its free end maybe set at any desirable position. F is a treadle pivoted to the free end of the brace E. G is a togglegoint, the upper end of which is pivoted to the piece B by a removable pin, and the lower end of which passes through a mortise in the `posts A and A', and is pivoted t0 the latter by a. removable pin. The ends of this toggle may also be perforat` ed and attached to the parts mentioned by passing a removable pin through any of the perforations, thereby rendering the toggle adjustable. H is a connecting-arm pivoted to the togglejoint and to the rear end of the treadle. Ils a ratchet rigidly attached to the post A, and I is a projection extending from the treadle, and engaging the ratchet so as to hold the treadle. down when the foot of the Workman is removed. The vise maybe attached to a bench or table in any suitable manner, and A and B may represent a bench or table.
The vise is operated by placing the foot on the treadle. This throws the lower end of the post A out, and its upper end in, by reason of the action vof the toggle-joint and treadle, so that Whatever is placed between the jaws will be rmly held, and the treadle is held in place in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination, the rigid jaw A attached to the part B, the headed bar O supportin g the movable jaw A and constituting its fulcrum, the brace E and treadle F pivoted thereto, the toggle Gr pivcted to the lower end ot1 the jaw A and connected to the treadle, all ccnstructed and arranged together substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
