Be it known that I, O. I-I. GARDNER, of Fulton, in the county of Oswego, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bench-Viso; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exa-etdeseription thereof, which will enableothers skilled in the art to make and use the'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecification.

My invention has for its object to improve the construction of bench-visos, so as to enable them to adjust themselves to the form of the object to be held, and to enable them to be adjusted, so that the jaws may stand at any desired horizontal angle with the bench, and which shall at the same time be simple in construction and easily adjusted; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various "p'arts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the bench, to which the .viseis attached. B is the rear jaw f the vise, the lower end of the shank, b1, of which rests and is pivoted in a socket, C, attached to the floor, To the rear side of the upper part of the shank 61 of the rear jaw B is attached a semicircular plate, D, having a downwardly-projecting flange formed upon its curved edge, whichts over a curved shoulder formed upon a plate, E, securely attached to the bench A. lThe plate E ismade with curved slot tor the receptioniof the clamping-s'crew'F, the head of which slides i along in a recess formed upon the under side of the plate E. This enables the shank of the rear jaw to he so adjusted that the said jaw maystand atanydesired horizontal angle with the bench A.
When adjusted, the shank of the rear'jaw B is secured in place by turning downthe nutf upon the screw F,clamping the plate D to the plate E.
G is the front or movablejaw, the lower end of the shank, g, ot` which has a hall, H, formed upon its lower end, which fits and works in a socket formed in the outer part of the cylindrical slide-bar I.`
J is a spring, one end of which is secured in a recess formed 'inthe interior of the slide-bar I,.and the free end of which .rests iii a circular groove formed around Athe ball H, as shown in` fig. 2.` rThe effect of the spring J is to hold the'iront jaw G back from the rearjaw B, except when forced forward by the clampinglscrew, for convenience in putting the object to be held into the vise or taking it out.
The slide-bar I, I prefer to form in two equal semi-cylindrical parts for convenience in placing the ball and spring-J inA their places, said parts being secured to euch other byscrews.
The `cylindrical slide-bar I passes through 'a hole formed in the shank b of the rearjaw B for its recepti0n,
and its outer end rests upon an arm orsu'pport,.b2, formed upon or securelyattached vto the forward side ofthe lower part of the shan-k b, as shown in lg.t2.
The ey'rindricul slide-'oar I is held in place, when adjusted, by a p'awl, K,`pvoted to the forward iside ofthe shank b1, and the lower end of which enters-one'orthe other ot' the notehesformed inthe upper side of said bar,`

L is the clamping-screw, whichpasses through a. hole in the upper part of the shank g', and screws into a long nut, M, connected with theupper part of the rear shank bl. Y Y f Y Y N is a saddle-washer, which isy interposed between the head of the screw L and the side of the shan-k g.
The forward side-of the washer N is concaved, andthe adjacentl side of. the shankig is made curved or, rounded, so that the screwL may always press squarely against the shank g', however saidshnnk may be turned upon the ball-and-socketjoint at its lower end.

Upon the lower side edges of the dog O are formed downwardly-projecting anges, which, when said dog islowcred, overlap the Iupper side edges ofthe squared outer end of the cylindrical slide-bar I, so as to prevent the movement of the said shank g upon the socket-joint when it is desired that the jaw Gshould be held parallel with the jaw B.
P is a spring, attached to the outc and when the dog O is raised, springsl pended, allowing the jaw Gto work freely upon the ball-and-soekctjoint formed upon the lower end of its shank y', to adjust itselfI to the shape of object to be held.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentl l. The combination of the spring J `Vith the ball H, formed upon the lower end of the shank gu', and with the cylindrical slide-bar I, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose setforth. v
2. The combination ofthe sliding dog O with the shank g of the front jaw G, and with the outer end of the cylindrical sliding bar I, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth..
3. The combinationy of the spring-catch P with the shank g', and with the sliding dog O, substantially as r sido of the shank g', the point ofl which rests against the said shank,

4. The described construction of the flanged plate D, and the recessed and slotted plate E, the former being attached to the shank of the jaw B by a screw, in-order to bc removable, as herein shown anddescribed.
