Description

ea e tml- 5mm @anni i (It J..D. BECK, OF`LIBE'RTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 88,834, dated April 13, 1869.
IMPROVED vrsn.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J. D. BECK, of Liberty, in the county of Tioga, and State of Pennsylvania, have in,- vented a new and improved Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Y Figure l is a vertical section of my improved vise, taken through the line x z, fig. 2.
Figure 2. is a top or plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail view of the adjustable plate for holding bevelled work.
Figure 4 is a detail viewv of the plate for holdin curved, or irregular work.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object, to furnish an improved vise, which shall be so constructed and arranged,
as to securely'hold irregular bevelled or plain work, and which shall, at the same time, be simple in construction, and easily adjusted; and
It consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the bench.
B is the bed-plate of the vise, which is securely bolted to the bench A.
G is the stationary jaw, which is cast solid with the bed-.plate B, and through which, and through a groove in the upper side of the'bed-plate B, slides the extension-bar D. l
The extension-bar D is made hollow, or is chambered longitudinally upon its under side, to receive the screw E, the nut F, and the guide-socket G.
The screw E is operated by a lever, e, in the ordinary manner, and is swivelled to the forward end of the extension-bar D,'by a screw, 82,'the forward end of which enters a circular groove around the neck of said screw,'as shown in g. l.
The nut F, through which the screw E passes, is set ina socket in the groove in the bed-plate B, where it is secured in place by the bolts f1 f2, as shown in iig. l.
The socket G, which is designed to serve as a guide and guard to the screw E, may be securely bolted to the bed-plate B, or may be cast solid with said bedplate, as may be desired, or convenient, and is provided with bearing-places, g', upon which the extension-bar D slides, so as to prevent side-strain, or twist in operating the said bar D.
H is the movable jaw, which is pivoted to the forward part of the extension-bar D, by the bolt I and nut J, said bolt passing up through the said bar D, and throughthe forwardly-projecting end of the base ofthe movable jaw H.
The nut J is kept from being turned off whenl moving the jaw H about the pivoting-bolt I, hy the small screw j which passes in through the said nut, and the end of which presses against the said screw, as shown in fig. l.
The jaw H is made to carry the bolt I with it, in its movement, by the small screw jz, which passes in through the forward-projecting end of the base ofthe jaw H, and its forward end enters a longitudinal groove in the said bolt I, thus preventing the turning of the said bolt in the said jaw, while allowing the bolt to be tightened by operating the nut J.
K is a pin, which passes down through a hole in the outwardly-projecting part of the movable jaw H, and enters a hole in the upper side of the extension-bar D,
so as to hold thejaw H parallel with the jaw G, when points, to hold the work, and which are secured to said jaws by screws.
M is a plate, the rear side ofwhich, that rests against the jaw of the vise, is rounded oli', so as to rockl upon the said jaw, and is slotted, so that the face-points of the jaw may not interfere with its movements.
'Ihe upper part of the plate M is slotted, to receive the pin m1, which passes through a hole in the steel face L, and through a rubber block N, placed in a recess in the vise-jaw, and secured in place by the steel plate L, so as to hold the said pin securely, and prevent it from working out. The lower end of the plate M is notched, to it, rest, and ride upon the extensionbar D.
O is a bar, which enters andslides back and forth in a groove in the vise-jaw, above the extension-bar D, and having a notch in the upperside of its outer end, to receive a pin, m2, attached to ears upon the rear side of the lower part of the said plate M, as shown in figs. I and 3. 4
P p is a pin and spring, similar in construction and use to the pin K k', and which, when forced down, enters holes in the bar O, to hold the plate M in a vertical position, and to hold the said bar in place when the plate M has been removed, and the bar O pushed fully in, so as to be out of the way.
Q is a screw, passing down throu h a hole in the rear part of the vise-j aw, so that itsl orward end may rest upon the bar O, and secure it in place in whatever position it may be.
The screw Q, is operated by means of a leven-q, passing through its head, as shown. j
The platevM is designed for use in holding bevelled work, and when so used, a similar plate should be attached to each-of the vise-jaws. The plates M are automatic, and ladj ust themselves to the bevel of the work to be held. For holding thin bexelled work, the work is pushed down between lthe plates to the bar D. The plates M are then adjusted, and secured by the. screws Q. rlhe work may then be raised, and secured between the plates, with as shallow a gripe as may be desired, and will he held securely-in that position.
R is a plate, the lower end of which is connected with the forward edge of the base of the jaw H, by a guide or dowel-pin 1", which enters a hole in the said part of the said jaw, ancl the upper end of which is provided with a p in, lr2, which passes through a hole in the steel plate L, and through the rubber block N, as Yshown in fig. l. The upper part of the plate R is enlarged, as shown in figs. l and 4, and is recessed, to
lreceive the three slides S, and two levers T.
The levers T are pivoted at their middle points, midway between the slides S, and their ends enter holes, or slots in the said slides S, as shown in dotted lines in figs. l and 4.
U is a spring-plate, the middle part of which is secured to the end of the middle slide S, by screws, and its ends are connected with the ends of the side-slides S, by bolts passing through slots in the said springplate U. The inner ends of the said bolts may, if desil'ed,pass through rubber blocks placed in recesses in the said side-slides. The plate R, and its attachments, are designed for holding curved, and other irregular work, and when so used, a similar plate should be attached to each jaw of the vise, the springplate U, slides S, and levers T, enabling the device to adjust itself to, and securely hold the said irregular work. d
For holding carved, and other delicate work, rubber blocks may be secured to thc forward side of plates connected with-the vise-jaws, in the same manner as the plate R.
Having thus described my invention, l
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patente l. The construction, and arrangement together, in the manner specified, of the vertically-'adjustable plate LNI, pin ml, bar O, screw Q, pin P, and stationary jaw C, as and for the purpose vset forth.
2. The construction, and arrangement together, in the manner specified, of plate R, slides S, levers T, spring-plate U, pin r2, and movable jaw H, as and fer the purpose specified.
3. The arrangement, on the jaws, of the face-plates as described, to hold the plates R and M in position.
J. D. BECK.
