UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT R. HURLBURT, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WILCOX, CRITTEN- DEN AND COMPANY (INCORPORATED), OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TION OF CONNECTICUT.
DECK-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Application filed September 16, 1907. Serial No. 393,217.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT R. HURLBURT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Deck- Plates, of which the 'ollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in deck plates, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a simple, convenient and economical locking means for securing the cover member.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the deck plate having certain details of construction, and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a plan view of my deck plate complete; Fig. 2 is a view from the underside thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon line A-B of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the bolt case upon line CD of Fig. 3 with the bolt therein.
In carrying out my invention I provide a body member 1 with an overhanging flange 2 upon its top side, through which are the holes 3 whereby the same is permanently secured,
and having an inwardly projecting lip 4 upon the interior thereof.
The cover member is designated by the numeral 5 and has a fixed hook 6 thereon which projects under the lip 4, as shown in Fig. 3, and diametrically opposite said fixed hook are the ears 7 between which is pivotally connected the latch 8 having a hook 9 upon one end and terminating at its other end in a finger piece 10 which lies in a recess in said cover member with the top surface thereof flush with the surface of said cover member when the hook end 9 is in engagement with the underside of the hp 4, as shown in Fig. 3. A notch 11 is made in the top of the cover member 5 for convenience in grasping the finger piece 10 when the same is in its down position.
Secured to the underside of the cover member, and substantially coaxial therewith, is the bolt case 12 having a key pin 18 concentric therewith, and movably mounted therein is the locking bolt 14 having a notch 15 in one side thereof for the entrance of the key bit. Through the top of the cover member 5, and concealed beneath the finger piece 10, is the key hole 16.
After the cover member is inserted within the body member the finger piece 10 is swung upon its pivot mounting so as to stand at substantially a right angle to the cover member, and while in this position the key is laced u on the pin 13 through the key hol e 16 an rotated in the bolt case, the bit of the key entering the notch 15 in the bolt 14 and moving said bolt so that the end thereof is pushed under the lip 4, after which the key is removed and the finger piece 10 dropped into its closed position. l/Vhen the bolt is in the position just described it will be impossible to remove the cover member out of the body member without withdrawing the bolt, as the end thereof is under the lip 4 upon one side and the fixed hook 6 upon the opposite side of the center of said cover member.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure I by Letters Patent, is
1. In a deck plate, the combination with the body member; of a cover member having fixed means thereon for securing said cover member u on one side thereof to said cover member; ocking means slidably mounted upon the underside of said cover member; and key means for actuating said locking mechanism whereby said cover member will be secured to said body member.
2. In a deck plate, the combination with the body member; of a cover member; a latch member pivotally connected with said cover member having lifting means upon one end thereof; a bolt connected with said cover member and lying substantially parallel therewith; and means for shifting said bolt, whereby said cover member is locked in said body member irrespective of the relative position of said cover member in said body member.
3. In a deck plate, the combination with the body member; of a cover member; a latch member pivotally connected with said cover member having lifting means upon one end thereof; and key actuated means for locking said cover member in said body member, the key aperture of said means being concealed beneath said lifting means when in one of its positions.
4. In a deck plate, the combination with the body member 1 having the lip 2 thereon; of the cover member 5 provided with the integral hook 6; the latch member 8 pivotally connected with said cover member; and the key actuated bolt 14 movably connected with said cover member, substantially parallel therewith and upon one side of the center thereof. I 5. In a deck late, the combination with the body mem er; of a cover member; a latch member ivotally connected with said cover member l aving lifting means upon one end thereof; a bolt connected with said cover member and lying substantially parallel therewith; and means for actuating said bolt while said latch member is disengaged from said body member.
6. In a deck plate, the combination with the body member; of a cover member having a key aperture therethrough; and a latch member connected with said cover member and concealing said key aperture when in one of its ositions.
7. n a deck plate, the combination with the body member; of a cover member; a notched locking bolt lying substantially parallel with said cover member, actuated by key means from the outside of said cover member irrespective of the relative position of said cover member in said body member; and a lifting means connected with said cover member, one end of which lies substantially flat with said cover member when in one of its positions.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT R. HURLBURT.
